College Hoops Rundown: Lady Terps Fall, GW Is Sweet
The Maryland women’s basketball team won’t have a chance to repeat as national champions. The Terps lost to Mississippi in the second round 89-78. Maryland came into the tournament as a 2-seed, and their early exit is something of a disappointment, especially considered they returned almost their entire team from last year’s title run. Foggy Bottom folks still have something to cheer for, however, as the Colonials beat Texas A&M on Monday and will face…

Local Teams Go 2-1 in NCAA Tourney
College basketball fans on the Hilltop and in College Park are pleased, while the ones in Foggy Bottom probably wish they hadn’t turned on the TV. The Hoyas pounded Belmont and will face Boston College, while the Terps handled Davidson and will face Butler, and the Colonials were clobbered by Vanderbilt, losing by 33. And over at the DCist Reader-Staff Bracketfest, Kyle Mahaney is in the lead, having picked every game except Butler over…

College Hoops Rundown: Hoyas Have Bite
Hoyas Bully the Irish Georgetown came into Saturday’s contest with Notre Dame after a successful, if underwhelming non-conference season. After starting the year with high hopes and a top ten ranking, three early losses pushed them off the national radar and out of the rankings. ND, however, was so hot they were smokin’, and riding a 12-game winning streak to a #17 ranking. But after a 66-48 thrashing of the Irish at the Verizon Center,…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Sunday. Usually, a quiet, contemplative day in the Blogosphere. But not here in the Ist-a-Verse. Nonono! Just look below and see all of the wild and crazy stuff our staffs are up to. In Austin, bands are beginning to confirm for SXSW and the rumor mill is up and running. Good thing, too, because we all know how much Austinites love live performances. Austin also found itself in the national spotlight, with Longhorn Legend…

Mixed Results for Local Teams in BB&T Classic
The BB&T Classic has been pitting local college hoops teams against each other for 12 years, sporting a name change and some changes in format over the span. The three-game event at the Verizon Center opened with consummate Cinderella team George Mason against Bucknell, followed by George Washington against hotly tipped Virginia Tech, and concluding with resurgent Maryland against Notre Dame. While those are nice matchups, you may have noticed two things missing: local bragging…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 1
Prior to yesterday afternoon, the last time the Georgetown Hoyas took the court they put on an embarrassing performance, losing to South Florida and costing themselves a first-round bye in the Big East conference tournament in the process. In the first half of Wednesday’s game against Notre Dame, they extended their streak of mediocre-to-bad play to 60 minutes, missing their first 12 shots and trailing at the break before rallying for a 67-63 win….

Bienvenue, Parisist!
Wow. Just after the -ist family expanded to Asia and the City of Brotherly Love, our bosses up at Gothamist let us know that Parisist, the first -ist site in a city to use the Euro and the first to be in a different language (French, natch), is open for business. We’re excited to have them aboard, though our decidedly elementary French can only parse out that they’re writing about a big festival with kebabs…
