The newly elected governor released $70 in previously withheld funds to expand abortion access, build out a cannabis industry, and stand up a new paid family leave program.

The employees who run D.C.’s paid leave program and the rest of the city’s services are not eligible for it.

Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to put a $400 million surplus in the paid family leave program to use for business relief, a move progressive activists and some lawmakers oppose.

Advocates say the change is a step in the right direction, but they want mothers of stillborn children to be able to claim the entirety of their maternity leave.

The city’s chief financial officer has certified that the program has enough funding to move forward.

“This move is rare for our industry and we hope this creates a conversation for other companies to join in,” said the founders of the homegrown salad chain.

Council member Elissa Silverman (I-At Large) helped write a law requiring that employers provide paid family leave. And now Dionne Reeder, a restaurant owner, wants Silverman out of office.

Here’s what is happening with the legislation’s latest go-around.

A hearing on the new proposal (or proposals) may not be held until June.

It will almost certainly go into effect.
