Legislators have tried and failed for three years to get a law on the books.

The Council will take a first vote next Tuesday on a law that would guarantee District workers 11 weeks in the event of a birth or adoption and 8 weeks to care for an ailing family member, funded by a .62 percent increase in payroll taxes.

That translates to about 2,000 fewer cases of the flu or flu-like illnesses a year.

County officials estimate that the law will extend paid sick leave to between 89,217 and 91,051 employees in the county that currently don’t have it.
