Morning Roundup: Still Got Our Fingers Edition
Welcome back to work, Washington. Actually, we’re curious — are any of you checking in on headlines from home today, having gone ahead and taken the rest of the week off? If so, we never liked you in the first place. Despite the tornado watch and humid, drizzly conditions, we hope you had a wonderful 4th of July celebration and of course, didn’t have any fireworks-related accidents. ABC7 is reporting that at least nine people…

Crime Doesn’t Pay, But Neither Does the Alternative
Former Editor-in-Chief Ryan Avent writes a weekly column about neighborhood and development issues. I’ll admit, it isn’t easy for me to talk about crime in the District with many of my friends, particularly those who live in the suburbs or outside the metro area entirely. In the minds of those who don’t often visit, Washington is still the murder capital of the United States, still caught in crack wars, still a place into which one…

Morning Roundup: Tug of War Edition
Good chilly morning to you, Washington. Our neighbors to the north have officially got themselves a new rock-star Governor, as Martin O’Malley was sworn in yesterday afternoon in Maryland to the sounds of the Saw Doctors, an Irish rock band that flew from Dublin for the event, and later to his own band, O’Malley’s March, at his inaugural ball. Not that we’re jealous or anything, but does anyone know if Mayor Fenty plays an instrument?…

Pedestrian Struck and Killed By Metrobus
NBC4 is reporting that a woman was struck and killed by a Metrobus around 10:30 last night in Mount Pleasant. Officials say an H8 bus was making a left turn onto Park Road from 16th Street when a pedestrian ran in front of the vehicle. A portion of 16th Street was closed for a time, but all lanes have since re-opened. No further information about the victim or the driver involved has been released and…

Giant Opening on Park Road
It’s finally opening. The long-awaited Giant supermarket on Park Road in Columbia Heights is welcoming in the neighborhood. It’s been getting good marks for its initial debut. From Olivia Leigh, who posted the photo at right in DCist Photos: It’s honestly the most amazing grocery store I’ve been in, and a very welcome addition to the neighborhood, since the previous one had a terrible selection. I walked in and was just absolutely stunned, and said,…

Theatre Comes to Columbia Heights
(From DCist contributor Eleanor Davis, with Austin Dienst) In four years of living in Columbia Heights, DCist has seen a lot of changes. New condos are springing up like dandelions in an un-mowed lawn, it’s been at least a year since anyone got shot in our alley, we’ve got a neighborhood coffeeshop, and there’s a great new bar we can walk to. But all of this can’t help but seem like a prelude to the…

Head for the Hills: Real Estate Rush Cometh
It’s official. Target Corp. is planning to anchor the massive urban retail complex that has been long talked about for Columbia Heights. Just how Target’s location in Brooklyn made it OK for hipsters to shop at Big Box stores, we think the Columbia Heights Target will create a quandary for the pre-gentrifiers up on the upper 14th Street corridor. (We expect an in-depth article in the City Paper soon.) The Post reports that the mayor’s…

Animal Cops Foil Park Road Chicken Sacrifice
District animal officials interrupted a plan by a Park Road woman to sacrifice two chickens to mark the anniversary of her fathers death. According to the Post, the Humane Society found three sickly chickens in a dirty cage. Two had their feet bound, the other had an eye injury. Records show that the woman was cited for keeping chickens in dirty cages three years ago. Though the incident is odd, it isn’t as strange as…

Flash Flooding Inundates Area
Last night’s heavy rains are still causing major problems today as the control room of the Silver Spring metrorail station was flooded, making it inoperable. Trains on the Red Line are running on 30 minute delays between Glenmont and Takoma. WMATA is running limited shuttle bus service service to compensate. Trains are operating manually through the section of track where the control room is inoperable. Several people across the area were trapped in their cars…
