Black Drivers Disproportionately Impacted By D.C. Law Blocking License Renewal For Unpaid Tickets
Only D.C. and two states currently prohibit a driver from renewing their license if they owe the government money — including unpaid parking and traffic tickets. There’s a push to change that.
Drivers hate parking tickets, but they’re all bound to get a few of them every year in D.C. But how much would it cost to, you know, pay your way out of just about every parking ticket for a year?
Federal workers may have had Christmas Eve off of work this year, but D.C. Department of Public Works parking enforcement officers apparently did not. No matter, though: DPW says it will dismiss tickets doled out during rush hour on Dec. 24, says WTOP. DPW Director William Howland Jr. explained that the agency believes “that many people thought enforcement was lifted since federal workers were given the day off.” If we were DPW employees, we don’t…

Morning Roundup: Transit Apathy Edition
Good morning, Washington. Not too upset about the coming Metro fare hike, are we? WJLA is reporting that only four people showed up to last night’s hearing on the measure. Of course, the meeting was held way out in Reston and was only the first of six opportunities that Metro riders will have to voice their opinion on the price increase. Maybe you’re just biding your time. Tax Scandal Grows Even Bigger: This is…

Transit on Thursday: Mail It
It’s not like you go to the D.C. DMV to chat up the happy employees as it is. Now, reports the Examiner, when it comes to getting rid of parking tickets, you might not have the choice. The DMV is proposing moving all ticket adjudication services to postal mail or the Internet as a means of streamlining the process. The motivation? The number of tickets is expected to skyrocket next year as the city…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
What with Paris Hilton’s release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we’ve been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we’re happy we’ve been free to blog about this week. Being the nation’s capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they…

Williams Addresses Church Parking
The church parking debate, once the province of irate residents and their neighborhood listservs, has gone mainstream — D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams took it on yesterday at his weekly press briefing. The Washington Times is reporting that Williams brushed the issue aside, claiming it was his right as the city’s chief executive to arbitrarily enforce District parking laws. Claimed Williams: There’s a zone of discretion for the executive…especially when it comes to something broad and…

Arts Agenda: More Bees with Honey
Forgive our lax attitude with the Arts Agenda of late, as we’ve been experiencing a few staff changes around here and are still working out the scheduling kinks. That being said, all of DCist would like to extend a hearty thank you to Cyndi Spain, who has decided to retire from her DCist arts duties to focus on being a busy career woman and a doting bride. Good luck, Cyndi! The Arts Agenda will return…
