DCist Photobloggers: Flickr Community

Although D.C. has a growing group of dedicated photobloggers (see our list on the bottom left) there are many photographers who would like to share their photos online but who don’t have the technical skills — or the time — to run a full time photoblog. For them there is the Washington DC/Metro Area photo sharing group on the popular photography website Flickr. Flickr can best be described as a super-charged Friendster (or TheFacebook) for…

Prospect of a Photo Ban

So the MTA in New York is again proposing a photo ban in the city’s subway. According to Gothamist, photobloggers are pissed off, perplexed as why their amateur photographic activities are being directly tied to terrorist threats. They even held a protest at Grand Central Terminal. We’re a little surprised that WMATA hasn’t seriously considered a photo ban in the metrorail system, but perhaps they’re all too busy enforcing candy bar bans. But be…

Taking Photos of Light Is Strictly Verboten

Even though one of Dan Flavin’s light sculptures is clearly in view to those outside on Pennsylvania Avenue, the National Gallery will scold you if you attempt to take photos of Flavin’s light from inside … even if it is with a crappy 1.5 megapixel cameraphone. That’s what a DCist reader informed us over the weekend, sending the clandestine photo to us. It is art, but it’s not the Sistine Chapel either, with camera…

Fifth DCist Photoblogger

Our fifth featured photoblogger is Grayson Shepard, a 19-year old Georgetown student. His photo-a-day photoblog yakusha featured photos from his native Richmond, Virginia over the summer, but will return to the District in the fall, he assures us. The photos shown are the corner of Connecticut and Florida avenues, an unidentified Metro escalator, and some buildings in Rosslyn. We realize all the photobloggers featured thus far are by men – women photographers, drop us…

Fourth Featured Photoblogger

DCist’s fourth featured photoblogger is Todd’s Ambivalent Images. His photoblog features a wide variety of photos taken around the city with narrative captions, including some interesting signs and stencils: this poster about crime in Dupont, an inquiring stencil, and this poster he spotted in Adams Morgan. Todd has lived in Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan and is a law student. The photos above are, from the top, a Metrobus on Q street, some commentary…

Third DCist Photoblogger

Our third DCist photoblogger is Drew McDermott, who was born in D.C. and now lives in Falls Church, Va. The above photo, of the East Falls Church Metro station, is one of a series he posted last May. He’s also posted photos of Fugazi, the Washington Monument, and the Whitehurst Freeway. The series: #1 Justin Florentine, #2 Elliot Teel…

The photos above, clockwise from top, are Anacostia River industrial area, National Cathedral, and New York Avenue, NW. Teel pursues photography as a hobby, and is starting his second year of law school at the University of the District of Columbia. He has lived in D.C. since 1996 and lives in Takoma. He…

Calling All D.C. Photobloggers!

D.C. is a photogenic city. Whether it’s the elegant urbanism of L’Enfant’s plan, the vistas on the National Mall, or the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, there’s always something to photograph. All too often, photographs end up in shoe boxes or languishing in forgotten computer directories. No longer: with tools like Flickr making photo and moblogging easier than ever, now’s the time to share your work with the world. And that’s where you come in. Do…
