Morning Roundup: Nightlife is the Right Life Edition

Good morning, D.C. If you’re like us (and presumably since you’re reading this, you are), you love to follow local news, especially for those few stories that come up every now again that manage to combine two of the local media’s favorite tropes: fear mongering and funny names. For example, just when you thought the intersex fish problem in the Potomac had drifted off into the ethereal plane of being old news, the Sierra Club…

Morning Roundup: Crime Back Up Edition

Good morning, Washington. We hope you had a safe weekend and were able to enjoy the cooler weather on Sunday thanks to the rain brought in by remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. The respite from the heat, which looks like it may last through Wednesday, is one of the few things we can find to be upbeat about as we go over today’s headlines. As you’ve already heard, Tonya Bell, a 30-year-old woman from Oxon…

Morning Roundup: June First Edition

Welcome to June, Washington. Also welcome to the end, at last, of your short post-holiday work week. We do hope it wasn’t too painful. Even if it was, the good news is that it’s going to be relatively pleasant, if a touch on the hot and humid side, most of the weekend. So spend some time sitting on your front stoop sipping iced tea. Just remember to slather on the sunblock, and of course, invite…

We’re also putting together a few ideas for last-minute day trips for those…

D.C. Council Roundup

It was an awfully busy day for the D.C. Council Tuesday, so we thought we’d give you a quick glance at everything that went down in yesterday’s session. >> As expected after a 9-2 committee vote earlier in the day, the Council voted by the same margin to approve Mayor Fenty’s takeover plan for D.C. Public Schools yesterday. The council will need to give final approval in a second vote, and Congress is of course…

School Takeover Plan Moves Ahead

Mayor Adrian Fenty’s plan to take personal control of D.C. Public Schools took one important step forward today, and may yet take another. In a 9-2 vote that took the proposal out of committee, the Washington Post reports the Council gave the takeover its first official blessing, paving the way for a first reading vote that could still happen in an extended session today. The committee vote took place after Lisa Comfort Bradford, a candidate…

Early Impressions Matter for Potential Chief

As the Washington Post pointed out in an interesting profile of Acting Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier this morning, the D.C. Council is set to vote on her confirmation in two weeks. While the choice of Lanier as Chief by Mayor Adrian Fenty was by no means without controversy — she is after all young, white and female, in a force that’s mostly black and male — there’s little to suggest the Council won’t…
