Where Are the Local Colleges in the NBA?

Last week the Wizards signed former GW forward Mike Hall to a 10-day contract, making him the second Colonial from last year’s team to make it to the NBA. The first was Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who scored the first points by a GW player in the NBA since Yinka “the Stinka” Dare in 1998. Neither look to play much this season, but it got us thinking – where are all the other players from local colleges?…

Colonials Trying To Make It In NBA

Last season, the GW men’s hoops team rode an undefeated conference season and gaudy #6 ranking (deserved or not) into the second round of the NCAA tournament. And now three Colonials – Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Mike Hall and Danilo Pinnock – are playing in the NBA preseason. Pinnock was the only Colonial (and only player from a D.C.-area college) drafted, taken by the Mavericks in the late second round and promptly traded to the Lakers, while…

GW’s Hall Signs with Wizards

Former GW basketball standout Mike Hall has signed with the Washington Wizards. Though the contract is not guaranteed, it is Hall’s best chance of joining fellow classmate Pops Mensah-Bonsu in the big leagues (former teammate Danilo Pinnock also has a chance to make an NBA roster). An active leader of the Colonials during his 4 years with the A-10 school, Hall was the “glue” guy on GW’s squad. He hustled around the court, grabbed…

Pops Signs with Mavs

The George Washington University’s most recognizable basketball player of the last four years, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks yesterday. Known for his thunderous dunks and an affable personality, “The Mayor” played in the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City summer leagues. Though he was not initially expected to make the Mavericks’ deep roster, Pops’ play impressed team president Donnie Nelson enough that he cited Pops as “the most athletic…

GW’s Pinnock Staying In Draft

This entry was written by DCist contributor Andrew Wiseman Bad news for GW basketball fans – leading scorer Danilo Pinnock’s GW days are over, as he will soon sign with an agent. Pinnock, a junior, had entered his name into the NBA draft but was expected to return until now. The Colonials already lost senior forwards Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Mike Hall, and Omar Williams to graduation, so another top ten ranking in Foggy Bottom doesn’t appear…

Ibekwe, Strawberry Enter Draft

Maryland juniors Ekenna Ibekwe and D.J. Strawberry are reportedly entering the NBA Draft. This isn’t cause for alarm for Terps fans, though. Neither player is expected to hire an agent, meaning they’ll retain their eligibility to return to college. The pair are merely seeing where their draft stock lies and taking the opportunity to compete for NBA scouts in pre-draft camps. Barring incredible performances in those workouts, they’ll both be back in Terps uniforms…

College Hoops Roundup: GW, UMd, Howard win

It’s a familiar script for the George Washington mens’ basketball team. Let an inferior team hang around — maybe even lead — until midway through the second half, then go on a devastating run. In the case of last night’s 89-78 win at St. Bonaventure, the Colonials trailed by four with under eight minutes left before reeling off 13 straight points to take control. Three Colonials finished in double figures in both points and…

Weekend Hoops Roundup: Everyone But Maryland Edition

It was a busy weekend for college hoops in the area. By and large, it was also a successful one. George Washington clinched the regular season Atlantic 10 title, beating Fordham 78-67 at the Smith Center Saturday night. Playing without injured forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the Colonials won their sixteenth straight game behind 19 points from sophomore guard Maureece Rice. His backcourt mates, Danilo Pinnock (17 points) and Carl Elliott (16 points) also stepped up in…

College Hoops Roundup: Ruh-Roh Edition

George Washington won its 15th straight game last night, but the bigger news is that star forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu twisted his knee just before halftime and didn’t return. Mensah-Bonsu, the team’s second-leading scorer and rebounder, will be evaluated today. We (or, more likely, some alert DCist reader) will have an update on his status when it becomes available. Reserve forward Regis Koundjia stepped up in Mensah-Bonsu’s absence, chipping in with 13 points, 5 rebounds and…

GW Survives; Terps, Hoyas Lose

On their way to a 19-1 record, George Washington has shown flashes of brilliance, but also a disturbing tendency to turn their intensity on and off. Both those charateristics were on display in Philadelphia Saturday against St. Joseph’s. The Colonials sleepwalked through most of the game, but found just enough effort to pull out a 64-62 win. After St. Joe’s came back to take a one-point lead, Pops Mensah-Bonsu scored the last of his…
