The change mirrored national trends, as the Census Bureau found the total U.S. population increased by 0.4% over the past year.

D.C. and Maryland now rank among the most diverse places in the U.S., though the growth of the white population in D.C. continues to prompt concerns over gentrification and displacement.

Many city dwellers relocated to neighborhoods within the D.C. region. Others went further — to the beach.

That D.C.’s population was 23,000 people less than last year’s estimate could mean the city takes a hit on federal funding, but it’s still too early to say whether that will certainly happen.

D.C.’s official population came in 3.3% lower than previous estimates from the Census Bureau, but still grew at a fast pace.

2017 to 2018 represented the slowest year of growth in a decade.

Since 2010, the District’s population has expanded by more than 15 percent.

The District of Columbia added 12,392 residents.

D.C. was the fifth fastest growing “state” between 2013 and 2014.

That’s a two percent increase.
