Morning Roundup: Mayor Fenty Edition

Welcome to the first morning of the Fenty administration, Washington. As we mentioned at the time, Mr. Fenty was officially sworn in yesterday. The Post reports that the ceremony was kept small in order to avoid distracting from funeral observances in President Ford’s honor. Very tactful! Good job so far, Mr. Mayor. Fenty’s inaugural address will occur today at the Washington Convention Center. Meet Your New First Lady: We’re still not quite ready to…

Photo of the Day: January 2, 2007

As we ring in the new year POTD-style, thanks to all those who put up great photos in the DCist Flickr pool of their holiday time in the city. MatthewBradley had some great shots up, especially some shots of the motorcade passing by with President Ford’s remains. One that caught my eye was this black and white shot of Penn Ave. up towards the Capitol dome. Alas, the dome is covered by fog, which…

Morning Roundup: Beginnings and Endings Edition

Wow! It seems like we haven’t posted anything since last year! We hope you enjoyed your holiday and are at least 86% less hungover than yesterday. The new year begins with an extra day off for many of you, as federal offices are closed in remembrance of President Ford. Those planning to go to work, or for that matter, anywhere else, should heed these street closures and parking restrictions. If you’re out and about and…

Morning Roundup: Ch-Ch-Changes Edition

Those of us stuck in quiet offices this week, staring blankly at wall clocks with increasing despair, have finally arrived at the Friday before New Year’s weekend. Currently DCist is taking over/under bets on the median time of departure from work today (especially for you lucky duck Federal employees who’ve got Tuesday off). How late will you last? 4 p.m.? 3? Just not bother to come back from lunch? We have to admit the option…

Go Home Already: Not You, Federal Employees

>> Yeah, you. You need to stay late tonight to make up for the crazy amount of time you’re about to have off. That’s right, those of us who do not work for the Federal Government are currently glaring up a storm at those of you who do, because the word from on high is now official: President Bush has declared January 2 as the official day of mourning for President Ford, which means Federal…

Morning Roundup: What’s Left Behind Edition

Ramsey’s Legacy Pondered: The Post has a front page story this morning mulling over exactly how outgoing Police Chief Ramsey will be remembered as he leaves his post. Often criticized for emphasizing public relations and merely reacting to crime issues instead of thinking ahead, but undeniably praised for bringing order to a corrupt department and out-of-control crime situation, council member Kathy Patterson (D-Ward 3) probably assessed Ramsey’s overall performance most accurately: “very mixed.” Ford’s…

Tentative Plans for Ford Funeral Reported

The Associated Press has the early word on scheduling for President Gerald Ford’s state funeral and public viewing, though they have yet to be approved by the Ford family and therefore are not final. Officials were preparing tentative plans for President Gerald Ford’s body to lie in state this weekend and expected a funeral service after New Year’s at National Cathedral capping days of mourning in the capital. U.S. Capitol Police officers said they were…

On the Road in Michigan: Part One

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Greetings from the hometown of Gerald R. Ford. While former President Ford was born in 1913 as Leslie King in Omaha, Neb., and he grew up with his adopted family in Grand Rapids, this inner suburb of Michigan’s second-largest city on its welcome sign claims Mr. Ford as a hometown son because the former chief executive and his family once resided in leafy lakeside community. Now the suburb is…
