Gray Swears In New Youth Mayor
Everyone knows that the District of Columbia has elected six different people as its mayor since Home Rule was instituted in 1973. But did you know that the city has also had 53 Youth Mayors during that same time span? “Got a lot of turnover there, don’t we?” remarked Mayor Vince Gray this morning, before clarifying that there’s Youth Mayors at various levels of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI). The latest? David Williams, who was recently elected the 53rd Youth Mayor of the District by 400 participants in the MYLI.
Because it’s going to be a vehicular nightmare. Mayor Vince Gray announced today at his weekly press conference that starting April 25, the stretch of New York Avenue NE heading east out of the District beyond Florida Avenue NE will be the site of heavy construction as a bridge over rail lines is replaced. The construction will center on a half-mile stretch of the traffic artery, cutting its six lanes down to four over the course of 24 months. Transportation officials said that the 87,000 cars that use the stretch on a daily basis should expect delays of between 15 and 30 minutes each day.

Henderson Promoted During Testy Press Conference
It was, as even Mayor Vince Gray admitted, the worst-kept secret in town — Interim D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson would be taking on the gig on a permanent basis. Gray made the official announcement today during a testy two-hour press conference in which local journalists were barred from asking questions about the ever-evolving Sulaimon Brown drama….
It was a rather smiley affair in the East Room of the Mayflower hotel this morning, as outgoing D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee officially announced her resignation. There were words of optimism, handshakes, thumbs up and awkward hugs-a-plenty between Mayor Adrian Fenty, presumptive Mayor-elect Vince Gray and, of course, Rhee.
