Week Around the -ists

The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryan Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said,…

Week Around the -Ists

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and…

Tim Gunn Comes Home

We’re gobsmacked that we forgot to mention Tim “Make it Work” Gunn’s planned whirlwind visit to the District this weekend. A native of Washington, he’s a veteran of Corcoran College of Art + Design and hit the big time as a mentor to aspiring designers on Bravo’s oddly addictive Project Runway. Along with co-author Kate Moloney, Gunn comes to town promoting his new fashion manifesto, Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style….

The Most Elegant Man in the Room

“A reality show about fashion?? That sounds horrible!” Tim Gunn shared his famous last words with a packed auditorium last night at the Corcoran, a nostalgic homecoming for this former student and administrator of the school. I’ve yet to meet a Project Runway fan who doesn’t adore Gunn and his witty mentoring of the show’s designers, and his lecture did not disappoint. Though some listeners may have been slightly disheartened to hear very few words…

Arts Agenda: She Blinded Me With Science

>>Tomorrow is First Friday, so head over to Dupont for an evening of receptions with slightly buzzed gallery-goers. Stop by the Marsha Mateyka Gallery to wonder at Jae Ko’s gorgeously twisted paper sculptures. Studio Gallery opens a new show this week with Susan Cohen’s Frozen by Fire 2 that features her painted clay sculptures enriched with metals and other natural elements. Check out the map for other First Friday participating galleries. >>Kendall Buster will be…

Transit on Thursday Friday: Low Expectations Edition

Is it us or does it seem like the folks in the Virginia House of Delegates have figured out how stop people from even thinking about how to solve the traffic mess in the D.C. suburbs and exurbs? Honestly, they kill new ideas so fast now, we can’t even call it news anymore. Our only hope is that when the next elections roll around, people remember why they are still idling in traffic. Unfortunately,…

At Least Pervez Musharraf Was Safe

Anyone living within two miles of Dupont Circle couldn’t have missed the police lockdown last night. Starting shortly after 9 p.m., D.C. police cruisers took positions along Connecticut Avenue up to the intersection with Florida Avenue, eventually shutting down all traffic — pedestrian and vehicular — without giving an explanation as to why. Two helicopters loudly hovered overhead, while overly anxious police officers screamed loudly at anyone who dared cross the street (a man walking…

Morning Roundup: Not From Texas Edition

Happy Monday, Washington. Many reasons to be smiling during the start of this week: fall appears to be settling in with some cool yet still-sunny weather, the Redskins totally (and finally!) kicked some ass yesterday against the Houston Texans, and Tim Gunn, Project Runway guru, will be doing a live chat on on washingtonpost.com at 11 a.m.! If only Jeffrey Sebelia would go ahead and get his mouth sewn shut, then we’d be truly happy….

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bids Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They’re also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues with our World Cup broadcasters here, but this guy…

Project Wendy

Remember season one of Project Runway (fashion-speak translation: SO last season)? You know, back when the show was a guilty pleasure and way before you developed a doomed, unrequited crush on Daniel Vosovic? Surely you haven’t forgotten season one finalist Wendy Pepper, the “Mom from Virginia” designer and arch nemesis of fellow finalists Kara Saun and Jay McCarroll. She was the one who — whether because of reality TV necessity or her actual personality traits…
