A new public financing program has made it easier for first-time candidates to run for office in D.C. — and beat incumbents — according to a report from the D.C. Auditor.

This year’s elections mean a majority of the legislature will be women as of 2021.

The campaign of Janeese Lewis George, who’s running for the Ward 4 D.C. Council seat, made the announcement Wednesday.

That’s roughly a third of the city’s budget for the program, which is currently in its first election year.

Former Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans was long known for his campaign fundraising, but now he’s turning to taxpayer dollars.
