U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that a controversial paraphrased quote on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will simply be removed instead of altered to more closely reflect what King said.

It’s been a year since the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opened to the public, but a controversial quote that officials have pledged to change remains.

Changing a controversial paraphrased quote on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial won’t be free, and the National Park Service may request private donations to cover the cost.

Plenty of people may have been happy when Interior Secretary Ken Salazar agreed to change a controversial quote on the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, but the man in charge of the foundation that raised the money to build it certainly isn’t one.

After plenty of controversy over a quote along one side of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar has instructed the National Park Service to go about changing it.

During a legislative meeting at the Wilson Building this afternoon, the D.C. Council was discussing a measure sponsored by Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh which would push the District’s primary up to April in order to fall into line with federal regulations. Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry had some reservations about the bill.
