The District has broken a number of other climate records in recent years, but not this one.

With a high of 89 degrees, Dulles Airport broke its record high of 87 degrees set in 1974 and again in 1996.

Summer 2012 was the third hottest for the lower 48 states in the 117 years since authorities began keeping track of the weather, according to an in-house publication at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

For the seventh time this year, the temperature in Washington has reached three digits. As of this writing (about 4 p.m.) it is currently 101 degrees in D.C., with a punishing heat index of 109.

For more than a week now, the high temperature in D.C. has topped 95 degrees. The eight-day streak continuing today matches a record set in 1987 and matched in 1993 and 2002.
