The D.C. suburb is the first in Maryland to study the possibility of paying reparations to Black and Native American residents.

A few dozen organizers gathered in freezing temperatures on Sunday for The March for Reparations after the event’s original date was pushed back due to the insurrection on January 6.

But Mayor Bowser has asked that all public gathering permits for the next two weeks be canceled.

The bill would establish a task force to study the issue and recommend proposals.

“They stepped up into a subject that’s been kicked down the road for centuries.”
