Morning Roundup: What About Bob (And Mark) Edition?

Good morning Washington. As you can probably imagine, just about any D.C.-area newspaper reader has been transfixed on Bob Woodward’s massive piece in today’s Post detailing how the Post’s iconic reporter became acquainted with W. Mark Felt who would become Deep Throat and together managed to topple the Nixon administration. There’s no need to summarize the whole thing here. Just go read it, just so you know what everyone is talking about at the water…

PNC Aims to Retool Riggs’ Tarnished Image

According to the Post, PNC Bank — the Pittsburgh-based financial corporation that recently bought Washington’s own troubled Riggs Bank — announced yesterday that it plans on hitting the District ground running in early May with extended service hours, no ATM fees, and a series of new branches. This plan comes amidst increasing bank competition in the Washington region and in the wake of last month’s purchase of Riggs’ 51 local branches for roughly $650 million….

DCSOB’s 28-Most Loathsome

Taking cues from New York Press’ 50-Most Loathsome New Yorkers, DCSOB (with the help of DCeiver) evaluated, rated and put together a list of D.C.’s most loathsome people. There are a few surprises among a list of some more obvious candidates. DCSOB picked Ward 4’s Adrian Fenty for the No. 1 slot. But on the list include Washingtonienne aka Jessica Cutler (No. 25); James F. of why.i.hate.dc (No. 21); Carol Thompson, the former Riggs Bank…

Riggs, PNC Merger in Jeopardy

Ahhh, the saga of Riggs Bank continues. The storied D.C.-based banking institution (which financed the purchase of Alaska and the Mexican-American War and more recently pleaded guilty to money laundering and not reporting suspicious activities of some of its clients … namely Equatorial Guinea, Saudi princes and Augusto Pinochet) which was set to be snatched up by Pittsburgh-based PNC, seems to be caught in merger purgatory. After PNC tried to dicker down Riggs’ $766 million…

Morning Roundup: Marion’s Back in Class Edition

Marion Barry Teaches Chemistry?: As Wonkette pointed out yesterday, Marion Barry went back to school and taught chemistry to a bunch of Ballou High School students as a visiting dignitary-turned-substitute teacher. While Wonkette makes light of Barry’s history putting certain chemicals in his body, as the Post reports, the former mayor-turned-Ward 8 councilman actually has a “bachelor’s and master’s degrees and some doctoral credit in chemistry.” While Barry did talk a bit about chemistry, he…

Anarchists Strike Adams Morgan

Wow, we thought Inauguration-related protests had run their course, but we learn from the Post that anarchists went wild in Adams Morgan late Thursday night. This DCist was eating at the Amsterdam Falafelshop on 18th Street and we didn’t sense that much was going on. But we guess we were distracted by our fries and falafel to notice that post-Counter Inaugural activities were getting out of hand on the streets. From the Post: Self-described…

Georgetown, Ohio

DCist is on to you, Jon Stewart, et al. On last night’s show “Daily Show” correspondent Samantha Bee was “reporting” live from Cleveland after the vice presidential debate with a busy street scene behind her. We all know that “Daily Show” correspondents do their thing in front of a blue screen in New York, but Bee’s backdrop was not Cleveland, but Georgetown. If you spied the golden dome of the Riggs Bank at Wisconsin Avenue…
