Shows featuring abstract paintings, Afro modernism, and other bold themes provide a great jumping-off point for exploring the arts in the region.

When the much-anticipated museum opens on Oct. 29, it will offer two dozen galleries, and a Marvin Gaye-inspired opening exhibit, all free to D.C. residents.
