Pollstar Concert Industry Awards Nominate Locals
Once again, the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards nomination list shows that D.C.’s no small potatoes when it comes to touring music. Like last year, the 9:30 Club is nominated for Nightclub of the Year, Wolf Trap’s Filene Center is nominated for the Red Rocks small outdoor venue award, and Birchmere’s Michael Jawarek is nominated for Nightclub Talent Buyer of the Year. There are a few new additions to our area’s nods too. The Verizon…

MLS Cup 2007 Preview
Our beloved D.C. United may have crashed and burned (again) in the MLS playoffs this season, but life goes on. Also, the playoffs go on — right in our backyard, in fact. Many moons ago, Washington was picked to host the 2007 MLS Cup this Sunday at noon, at RFK. Time to put aside your grieving and check out the game. Tickets start at $30, maybe even less on Craigslist. When else are you going…

Caps Briefing: How Worthless Are They?
According to Forbes magazine, the Washington Capitals are the third most worthless team in the National Hockey League. This is a big step up from last year, when they were number one! Of course, being businessmen and not hockey fans, the boys at Forbes have failed to take into account the kinds of younger, developing players that the Caps hold, ready to carry them to success either this year or in the immediate future. If…
Last week Prevention magazine put out its list of the Best Walking Cities of 2007. We were a little bit surprised by the results: 1. Madison, Wisconsin 2. Austin, Texas 3. San Francisco, California 4. Charlotte, North Carolina 5. Seattle, Washington 6. Henderson, Nevada 7. San Diego, California 8. San Jose, California 9. Chandler, Arizona 10. Virginia Beach, Virginia OK, so the top five cities are all plausible, even if we have a hard time…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark “Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid.” Is that a promise? They also give us this week’s best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow. Ah, Houstonist. They’re biking to work, that is, if they can figure out how to get there. That’s right, Mapquest says “Houston had the…

A Study of Engaging Art
Political art is a tricky thing; one can cross the line from clever criticism to heavy-handed vitriol with a quick stroke of the brush. American University’s Katzen Art Center provides a daring look at the many facets of this genre with Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement, a collection on tour from the San Jose Museum of Art in California. The show is a mixed bag of subject matter, media, and style, but each piece…

United to Host Chelsea in Battle of Champions
D.C. United fans celebrated a come-from-behind win this week and have been rewarded with a high profile exhibition game as a midsummer treat. Chelsea FC, who posted a 29-1-8 record this past season as they soared to win the Premiereship, will be coming to these shores to take on the United here in the DC area, as well as playing a pair of dates with Champions’ League runners-up AC Milan. AC Milan is similarly scheduled…

The Healthy-ist?
We’ve always thought of D.C. as a great place to live (we write for this site, so we kind of have to). But we were intrigued when we saw that in a recent study of health in the nation’s 50 largest metropolitan areas, Washington, D.C., came in as the second-healthiest city in the United States, beaten only by San Jose. The study, conducted by Sperling’s Best Places and Centrum, ranked the health of cities based…
