Gold Cup: U.S. Wear Down Honduras, 2-0

Santino Quaranta’s emotional evening took center stage — but there was still the matter of the match itself, a solid 2-0 win for U.S. over a tricky Honduras side last night at a pumping RFK Stadium. Obviously, ‘Tino wasn’t the only player out there who had something to prove in front of the 27,000-plus on hand — two former United players made a return to their former home, if but in a different jersey. Former…

Yes, It Is a Beautiful Game

It’s because we see something in the game that we see in ourselves. His name was announced with slight fanfare, mostly drowned out by the thousands of blue and white-clad cheering Hondurans in attendance. An enormous amount of sound is still capable of radiating through our stadium’s old bones and cavernous corridors. The perception is that this tournament doesn’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things. It’s a “B” team cup. A nicety….

Redemption: Quaranta Has Chance To Once Again Don U.S. Jersey

Photo by Kyle Gustafson. “I’m not going to be content. I want to make the World Cup team.” A lofty goal from a player that hasn’t suited up for his country in more than four years, sure; but knowing the man and the story behind those words, anything seems possible — yes, D.C. United’s Santino Quaranta will once again wear the shirt of his country. Rosters for the 2009 Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s yearly tournament…

Second Half Rally Snaps United’s Losing Streak

Saturday’s early game storyline must have seemed awfully familiar to D.C. United. After dominating possession for several stretches in the opening minutes, a momentary lapse of coverage in the defense led to a successful opposing counterattack. To add to the similarities, the protagonist of the counterattack was none other than last Wednesday’s lone goal scorer, Danny Dichio. Though United fought back to tie the score, the 6’2″ target man added another strike in the closing…

Opportunistic United Throttle HVFC, 5-0

The chilly air last night couldn’t have made Jamaican side Harbour View FC comfortable in their boots. After D.C. United’s second half scoring outburst, the conditions at RFK Stadium must have seemed downright unforgiving. In light of last Thursday’s draw in Kingston, each side entered the match needing a win to reach the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal. Despite the need to score, Harbour View held their 3-4-3 formation in a defensive posture the entire…

Galaxy Right at Home in RFK, Hand United 5-2 Loss

Despite having the best record in MLS, D.C. United took the field Saturday night looking to regain the form that has the team on pace for the second best season in MLS history. On paper, the visiting L.A. Galaxy seemed to be just what the doctor ordered. However, after a rough stretch that saw them lose 9 of 11 matches, the Galaxy have come around of late, losing only one of their last nine…

DC United Host LA Galaxy Saturday Night

Fresh off of their victory Wednesday night over the New York Red Bulls, MLS leading DC United hope to continue their winning ways Saturday night when they host the LA Galaxy. While the Galaxy’s 7-11-5 record may not sound too enticing there are plenty of subplots in Saturday’s game that bear watching. Recently departed Santino Quaranta, traded from DC to LA for a future draft pick, will be making his return to RFK. He’s…

Tuesday Sports Tidbits

Although the team is techincally on their All-Star break, DC United will take on the Columbus Crew tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Germantown, MD as part of the U.S. Open Cup. After losing to Real Salt Lake over the weekend, United will look to get back to their winning ways in a tournament they haven’t won since 1996. Friday Sports Notes

For the Washington Wizards, it’s “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” With an injured Caron Butler, the Wizards have lost four in a row going into tonight’s game against Chicago, who are fighting for their own playoff lives. The fifth seed, which only a week ago looked like a sure thing, is no longer guaranteed. The team is banged up, but that’s no excuse at this time of year. As of…
