Federal pandemic funding for universal free school meals is ending, and income-based eligibility requirements are back.
Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd introduced the bill in order to save money for parents and embarrassment for some students.
DCPS is paying more per meal than any of the other school systems that the D.C. Auditor’s office profiled.
“We recognized that when our schools are closed, many of our students don’t eat,” said Chancellor of DC Public Schools Kaya Henderson.

Public Schools’ school breakfast program as the best in the country, Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) dropped in on a downtown elementary school during the lunch hour to inspect the meals being served.
