Government Solicits Plans for Old Post Office
The U.S. government is soliciting bids for a potential renovation of the Old Post Office building, the Pennsylvania Avenue landmark which has held government offices since 1899. The General Services Administration is soliciting bids from companies interested in “redeveloping the OPO and its annex, the OPO alone or the annex alone,” but the press release makes clear renovation by the private sector is anything but certain: “If GSA determines through its review that redevelopment is…

Corridors Announced for Transit Alternatives Project
WMATA’s project to explore alternatives to bus and Metro service to the downtown area has selected seven corridors for further study for the system which would likely consist of either dedicated bus lanes or modern street cars. WMATA broke ground last fall on the Anacostia Corridor Demonstration Project, an effort to test the viability of a new streetcar system. The corridors selected run along the current routes of the city’s 30s, 90s, and 70s…

Planning How to Remember the Iraq War
A group calling themselves the “National Iraq War Memorial Foundation” has launched an online design competition we caught thanks to the blog Life Without Buildings. The group concedes designing a war memorial before the war ends is a bit unorthodox, however they say “This is a different kind of memorial, however — one that incorporates current emotions, memories, and beliefs.” Entering designs for their proposed site is simple and free, and after a March…

Randall Shelter Activists Back at It
(From DCist contributor Zoe Mitchell) Things are mighty fiesty inside the Wilson Building again today and it has nothing to do with baseball. According to an inside source, three activists from MayDay DC have already been arrested, while another activist is occupying the building’s ledge again. The activists are upset at the closure of the Randall Shelter, which is up for final vote today during the last regularly scheduled D.C. Council hearing this session. Also,…

Wegmans Takes Virginia
(By DCist contributor Amadie Hart) Forget Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Harris Teeter, and Balduccis. The latest grocery store import to enthrall D.C.-area consumers is Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans. The first Northern Virginia branch opened out by Dulles Airport in February, and the retail giant is set to open a second branch in Fairfax in early 2005. Connoisseurs of fresh produce, gourmet prepared foods, and fine wines have flocked to the Sterling branch since its grand opening….

‘National Treasure’ Tourism?
You’ve got to give them credit to try to make the most of an opportunity. The tourism boards of Washington D.C. and Philadelphia have teamed up to launch movietour.org, a website offering travelers discounts on hotels and travel and an itinerary to encourage people to explore some sites featured in the film National Treasure. They’ve even listed on their website an Amtrak discount code (“V631”) which they say will get you 50% off a companion’s…
