Mayor Muriel Bowser wants it to be the location of a new, modernized high school. But many Shaw residents say that the neighborhood deserves—and has been promised—a new middle school.

A neighborhood’s name is part of its identity. Adoption of it, or aversion to it, can say a lot about where a place is going — and where it came from. Today, we’ll look at the genesis of “Shaw.”

The first happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday at 4th and V Streets NW, just a block or so away from the Howard University campus.
