The family of DeAndre Thomas cites the removal of school resource officers as a factor in the shooting that severely injured him.

The deadly shooting marks the 18th death of a child by homicide in the District this year, adding to the grim toll gun violence has taken on kids in the region in 2022.

The mass shooting comes just days after a homicide that took place on the same block on October 2.

Police say they found two to three cars with damage from a firearm in the 3500 Block of South Jefferson St. No injuries have been reported.

Police have not yet identified who was responsible.
