Today is D.C. Emancipation Day, when the city celebrates the act that ended slavery within city limits in 1862.
One of the greatest American novels of the past 30 years is giving a Fairfax County high-school student a bit of agita. Naturally, the kid’s mother wants it banned.

Bob McDonnell Apologizes for Slavery Omission
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has been taking a ton of heat over the past 24 hours (including from DCist) for bringing Confederate History Month back to the commonwealth but trying to pretend like that history didn’t prominently include slavery. Man Pleads Guilty to Holding a Slave
From the AP via WTOP, it seems a Montgomery County man has pleaded guilty to holding a Nigerian teenager as a slave for five years. George Udeozor, 52, smuggled a 14-year-old Nigerian girl to the U.S. and used the girl as an unpaid domestic servant and child care provider. Sounds like that new Montgomery County law requiring contracts for domestic workers couldn’t have come at a better time….
