Snowpocalypse Redux: DDOT to Host Snow Removal Chat
Photo by ianseanlivingston Feel passionately about how the District handled the record breaking snowfall this winter? Well, the D.C. Dept. of Transportation is inviting folks to provide feedback on their efforts in an online chat with Director Gabe Klein Friday afternoon. DDOT holds online forums on a variety of topics, but this will be the first one reviewing the winter storms. Spokesperson John Lisle said DDOT has been reviewing various aspects of the city’s…

Cashing in on the Snowmaggedon
At least one local entrepreneur is trying to make some money off of this weekend’s record snow fall. A commemorative “I survived Snowmaggedon ’10” T-shirt can be yours for only $24! Before you protest the exorbitant price, we duly note that the seller promises a portion of every sale will be donated to SOME (So Others Might Eat), a worthy local non-profit. The shirts come in blue, and are available in a full array…

CNN Picks Up Snowball Fight, Blames “Protesters”
CNN.com featured yesterday’s snowball brouhaha on its home page, linking to ABC 7’s coverage of the incident. As if the negative coverage doesn’t threaten to be embarrassing enough for the District, the story — headlined “Snowball Fight Takes a Turn for the Worse” — paints a misguided picture of the day to say the least. According to WJLA and thus CNN, there was a “snowball fight-turned-unruly protest’ with “anti-war protesters dressed in anarchist garb”…

Snowpocalypse Paradox
Mayor Randy McClement of Frederick, Maryland, has asked drivers to move their parked cars off streets in order for city crews to perform curb-to-curb plowing, according to ABC 7. But where are they supposed to go in the meantime? There is free parking at the city garages until 6 a.m. Monday, but then drivers need to get to the city garages before 6 a.m. on Monday to retrieve their vehicles — which is to say…

Sunday the Morning After Photo: December 20, 2009
It’ll be a cold day in hell when the Congress passes progressive health care reform with a 60-vote supermajority. Wait, what? Flickrer Nivad captured this ephemeral micro-monument to our experience with the blizzard of 2009. At least, I think that is a small and not-to-scale Capitol. I don’t think the city got 3,468 inches of snow. (Maybe out at Dulles.)…
As you can see in the video, the 14th and U Streets NW snowball fight was some good-natured wintery mayhem. So why did Metropolitan Police Department officers feel the need to bust it up — and to draw a gun when they did? Early on, MPD officers tolerated the chaos. Around 150 snowballers lined up on the east and west sides of 14th Street NW just north of U Street, idling politely as passing…

Cormac McCarthyesque End Times Disguised as Fun
Photos by Leafblower Whole Foods stores are closing, the Zoo is closed, Metro may close above-ground stations — dogs and cats, living together! How are people in the District responding to snomg 2009? With whimsy and denial! As the snowpocalypse falls in all its fluffy fury, those who would embrace its flurries are planning a celebration of absurdity and destruction. At 2 p.m., the adherents of chaos will assemble at 14th and U Streets NW…

Snow Emergency in Effect Starting at 7 a.m.
The snOMG event of ’09 is soon to begin. We’re already hearing from people with early morning flights booked that they have been canceled. In the District, all DMV, DPR and public library facilities will be closed on Saturday, and Mayor Fenty has set a formal Snow Emergency starting at 7 a.m. — that means you must move your car from any designated snow emergency route before then, or it will be towed. You can…
