Morning Roundup: An Uneasy Peace Edition
Good morning, Washington. An estimated 10,000 people attended the dedication Sunday of the official memorial for the 32 victims killed at Virginia Tech on April 16. Students at the university, about four hours outside D.C., begin classes for the fall semester today. On the same day as the dedication, about 23 Virginia Tech students living in an off-campus apartment building were taken to hospitals after showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several of the…

Photo of the Day: July 16, 2007
Happy Monday, D.C. Today’s POTD comes to us from pixlesie, who captured an image illustrating nature’s resiliency and persistence despite the barriers humankind puts in its way. Well, it shows how well a tree can do in a pot on the sunny roof of the Air and Space Museum, at least. I like the lighting in this photo as well, which appears to be the product of the morning sun (the description says it’s…

Morning Roundup: Unseasonably Warm Edition
Good morning, Washington. It looks like it’s going to be much warmer today, with the sun peeking out from behind those clouds later this afternoon. Hope those gray skies didn’t fool you into dressing in too many layers like it did for us, because we’re currently sitting here sweating at our desks with nary a promise of air conditioning at this time of year. If only we had some kind of web site we…

Logan Gets New Lights
Sometimes it seems like anything involving both cars and Logan Circle is doomed to controversy. We’re sure you remember the great church parking debates of aught-six. That particular hornet’s nest seems to have finally calmed down and things have been pleasantly quiet around Logan’s roads. Eleventh Street got some new traffic lanes, the Circle got some new lights and we thought all was well. Not so! Much to our surprise, not everyone is happy…

Man Falls From RFK Upper Deck
This should go without saying: Stay away from edges, whether it’s the platform edge at train stations or at RFK Stadium, where a man is now in critical condition after falling from the stadium’s upper-deck during yesterday’s Nats-Braves game. From the AP, via Sports Illustrated: The 35-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately revealed, fell from a ramp on the 500 level of the stadium, hit several ramps and railings on the way down and…

The Machete: Weapon of Choice
One of the most gruesome images one can come across is that of a hacked-off limb. To shield your sensitive eyes, we decided to post this photo of a fairly innocent-looking machete. This one isn’t curved like normal ones are, but you get the point. To the friendly local satellite organizations for Central American-based gangs, the wielding of a machete carries with it more gravitas than ever before. The AP, via WTOP, reports that the…

Morning Roundup: Sans Umbrella Edition
Yeah, it’s raining (this DCist left his umbrella at the office, super!) and there are weather-related problems all over the region, including flooding. And look at the traffic from this D.C. traffic cam looking at the Suitland Parkway approach to the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Southeast. And it’s going to be in the 20s tomorrow morning. Summer was bound to end sometime. And there are 15-minute delays on the Yellow and Green lines in…

AIDS Activists Target Bush Nat’l HQ
The Bush-Cheney campaign’s national headquarters in Arlington, a location that is not broadcast to the general public, was raided by a number of AIDS/HIV activists, WTOP reports. Fourteen protesters found their way inside the headquarters, located in a non-descript office building at 2107 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington’s Court House area. Seven others chained themselves to the doors of the building. Twenty-one in all were arrested for trespassing. For more on the Bush-Cheney not-so-secret below-the-radar headquarters,…

Abandoned House Creates Stir in the Palisades
The Palisades is a quiet, sleepy District neighborhood, tucked away on a high bluff above the Potomac a few miles upriver from Georgetown. Little, if anything, newsworthy comes from the neighborhood. (Unless of course you count a busload of protesters from Chicago’s South Side showing up on Karl Rove’s front lawn on Weaver Terrace earlier this year.) But the neighborhood is in the news. According to Sunday’s Post, an abandoned house at 5136 Sherier Place…

Crime Blotter
It’s been a busy day for crime and justice news. A quick roundup … The Post notes that a charter bus was stolen from South Capitol Street, but was found later in Prince George’s County. Also three Colorado teenagers have been arrested on drug, weapons and illegal possession of fireworks charges when they drove their recreational vehicle into a restricted traffic zone near the White House. When security officials stopped the vehicle at 17th and…
