The public psychiatric hospital has settled a lawsuit filed by patients over the hospital’s October 2019 water crisis and inadequate COVID-19 safety procedures.

Disability Rights DC says staff members should have been able to prevent a patient’s murder in March.

The newly renovated shelter will bring the city’s first day service center East of the River.

GW’s school of Medicine and Health Science and GW Medical Faculty Associates will be providing a range of services at the hospital coming to St. Elizabeths East.

The secure facility, located in Southeast D.C., has faced criticism since last spring for its lack of coronavirus safety measures.

“Widely used, abusive restraints and seclusions are far from respectful or dignified treatment,” reads the report from Disability Rights DC.

At the District’s only public psychiatric hospital, four patients died after becoming sickened by the virus.

According to city statistics, 28 patients at D.C.’s only public psychiatric hospital have tested positive for the disease.

It will triple the amount of patients that the healthcare provider can see annually in Southeast.

Officials are hopeful that clean water will return to the city’s only public psychiatric hospital by the end of the week.
