Transit on Thursday: Ice, Ice Baby
Everyone knows that JFK once described the District as a city of Northern charm and Southern efficiency, but the same could be said about our winter weather contrasted with the complete incompetence of those who try to drive in its result or clear it from the roads. Beet juice or not, there’s ice on the roads and sidewalks. Walk and drive with caution. Torture Doesn’t Work: Guess what? Punishing Virginians with large fees – between…

What’s That You Say?
Last week was a busy one when it comes to good comments, with thoughtful and funny ones about the Navy Yard Metro, Columbia Heights Day’s existence, avatars, and more. And speaking of avatars, why not set up your own? Maybe you can be like monkeyrotica, who was the talk of DCist’s commentariat — what’s his going to be? Something profane? Something phallic? Mr. Monkey’s response was this: For an avatar, I was about to go…

At RFK, Remembering the Forgettable Griffiths
When the next chapter of Washington’s baseball history is written this spring, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium will once again become a focal point of this city’s attention. Since the Redskins moved out in 1997, it has mostly been a soccer field. And no matter how much D.C. United and MLS hype Freddy Adu, chances are you haven’t stopped by in some time. As you’re standing in line to see the Nationals in the…

Metrorail Extension Gets Thumbs Up
In his budget delivered to Congress, President Bush has given an important endorsement of WMATA’s plan to build an extention through Tyson’s Corner. The agency that oversees such matters has given the rail line from the West Falls Church station to Wiehle Avenue in Fairfax County a “recommended” rating. Considering ridership projections and cost-effectiveness, as the Post reports, the rating makes the project “eligible for 50 percent federal funding.” But drivers of the Dulles Toll…

Planning Your Escape from the Capital
When the Red Line was having trouble earlier this year and thousands of commuters were forced to walk downtown from the Van Ness-UDC station, WMATA said that public transit riders should have had an alternate plan to get from point A to point B. Then through a new communications strategy, it began stressing that fact more and more. As Washington is not only a terrorist target and particularly vulnerable to weather-related delays, WMATA has developed…
