Morning Roundup: Bluer Virginia Edition

Good morning, Washington. Make it to the polls yesterday? If so, we hope you did so before the sun went down — it got cold in a hurry last night, as the area rapidly moved from warmer-than-usual temps to colder-than-usual ones. CapitalWeather is saying that the weekend should be warmer, at least. Election 2007: The results are in, and it looks like it was a good night for Virginia’s Democrats. The Dems picked up…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Banner week for SFist as the site’s new editor introduced himself — hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF’s mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist’s readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with “open mic…

Go Home Already: Breaking News, Pipes, Democracy

>> Breaking news from the DCist News Desk Sofa: Anna Nicole Smith has died in Florida. Smith was reportedly found in unconscious in her Hollywood, Fla. hotel room and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Looking back, it’s hard to remember all that made Smith a tabloid celeb but we’re sure we’ll be seeing a Law & Order “ripped from the headlines” reminding us soon. [CNN.com] >> Never let it be said D.C. artists don’t…

It looks like it. We are, of course, speaking of the ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. WJLA is reporting that the Virginia State Senate today endorsed a ban on smoking…

Morning Roundup: Committee-Based Kookiness Edition

Good morning, Washington. It looks like today’s going to be cloudy and cold, with the weekend bringing snow — snow! — at long last. We know, we know: it’ll just be godawful slush and freezing rain, and in the unlikely event that it sticks around until Monday, we’ll no doubt still have to go to work (we’ll just be more cold & damp than usual when we arrive). But it doesn’t matter; we still get…

Morning Roundup: Cornel’s Jumbo Slice Edition

Well, DCist has gone and done it now. In an arbitrary post last week discussing the American Political Science Association’s annual meeting in the District, former DCist food connoisseur Kanishka offered $100 to any reader who could catch Cornel West scarfing down a jumbo slice. Safe bet, right? I mean, who would have thought that Cornel West would actually scarf down, of all things, a jumbo slice? Well, one reader managed just that. Above, Cathy…
