The storms aren’t necessarily more severe or frequent this year. But by no means is our region off the hook, climate-wise.

Bad afternoon thunderstorms shut down BWI airport for a bit after lightening struck an air traffic control tower.

What caused all that flooding in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park last year? A task force reports that it was a combination of old sewer lines and freakishly bad weather.

First, an earthquake damaged one of the National Cathedral’s finials. Then, Hurricane Irene knocked over a tree on its grounds. And now today, as a heavy band of storms plowed its way through the District, a crane working on repairing the Cathedral actually fell over, damaging a nearby building and several vehicles.

As if we haven’t had enough water falling from the sky in recent days, the National Weather Service has now extended a Flash Flood Watch that’s been in effect over the last couple of days until midnight tonight.

The elements apparently really had it in for the Postal Service last night. Not only was the Curseen-Morris Mail Processing Facility/Brentwood Post Office one of the many properties near Rhode Island Avenue NE which lost power due to the high winds, but the Post also reports that two postal employees suffered minor injuries after the wind blew out windows on as many as 30 mail trucks at the building.
