Help D.C. Girls to Rock!

Photo by Meaghan Gay We’re unabashed fans of Girls Rock! DC, the one-week day camp for girls age 8-18 (check out some of our previous coverage). The camp is now entering its second year, and they’ve asked us for help locating volunteers. Girls Rock! DC is seeking volunteers of all kinds to be counselors, band coaches, fundraisers, roadies and more. No musical experience is necessary, and volunteers can work during camp week (Aug. 10-15)…

Girls Rock! DC Showcase @ 9:30 Club

“Revolution girl style now!” Most of the girls who took the stage at the 9:30 Club early in the day on Saturday weren’t yet born 17 years ago when that rallying cry kicked off the International Pop Underground Festival and gave a name to Bikini Kill’s first record. But if the exuberance onstage and in the crowd was any indication, the spirit of that revolution is still going strong. Saturday’s showcase was the culminating event…

At this Summer Camp, Girls Learn to Rock

There are probably quite a few working bands on the East Coast who would pay good money to sit in on a workshop run by Vicki Savoula and Amanda MacKaye. The Black Cat talent buyer and the Fort Reno summer concert series organizer held a masterclass yesterday to teach a group of aspiring musicians how to approach booking their bands at some of D.C.’s most famous venues. Didn’t get an invite? That’s probably because you’re…

You can be sure that DCist will be there to rock out with the girls…

Do you know a young lady between the ages of eight and 18 who’d like to spend part of her summer learning how to play thrash metal? Is there any way you think I can pass for under 18 so I can attend? The deadline to register for Girls Rock!DC, the D.C. area’s first all-girl rock camp, is this coming Monday, June 9. The camp itself runs from August 11-15, and culminates with a performance…

Sci-Fi Femmes Fatales This Month at the Hirshhorn

The women of Venus want to once again experience a man’s touch. A former Miss D.C. transcends all normal applications of the term “statuesque beauty”. And Jane Fonda does what Jane Fonda does best: save the world. The Hirshhorn brings high camp into the realm of high art with the kickoff of their free “Summer Camp” film series this Thursday. The theme? The feisty, dangerous, and scantily-clad women of adolescent male fantasies 50s & 60s…
