The legendary pop-punk band showcased their latest album I Hate Music last night at the 9:30 Club with fellow North Carolina natives Spider Bags.

Usually when a band returns after an extended hiatus, there’s an assumption of decay. There was no evidence of the sort during Superchunk’s Friday night set at the 9:30 Club. Nobody talked about how much better they used to be or moaned that they missed them in their heyday. They couldn’t. Not with Mac McCaughan still covering a lot of square feet per second, prompting sing-a-longs that grew progressively louder and more animated with each song. The quartet was as tight and dynamic as any act that’s come through D.C. this year, proving that as influential as they are on the current crop of rock acts, they’re still quite relevant in their own right.
