Don’t Forget the Mumbo Sauce… In Your Pop Music
Like half-smokes, go-go and taxation without representation, mumbo sauce is something that’s uniquely D.C. And suddenly, it’s getting bandied about all over the radio. We’re not talking about the group Mambo Sauce, who have their own ode to the District. We’re talking about DJ Flexx (of WPGC)’s “Chicken Wings & Fried Rice”, a song that is — seriously — entirely about mumbo sauce. You can listen to a partial clip here, or tune your radio…

Shiloh Properties Watch: Day 1
I heard some promising construction-like noises coming from the direction of the condemned Shiloh Baptist Church properties this morning, but alas, it seems I was fooled by some friendly garbage men doing their normal Monday pick-ups. Since the buildings were condemned on Wednesday and the church was given orders to complete a list of repairs, including cleaning the interiors, installing new roofs, fixing brickwork and installing gutters, Shiloh has pledged to complete the work…

We Give Up: God Hates Us
You’ve got to be freaking kidding. A screenshot from our pals at CapitalWeather.com: The Snow Advisory in effect now through tomorrow morning is calling for 1 to 3 inches of mother-effing snow. The anger. And frustration. Is so palpable. We’re supposed to be frolicking in pastel dresses and letting Peeps melt on our tongues, not icing salting our front steps. Weather Gods, we at DCist shake our collective fists at you! Please feel free to…

The Weekly Feed: The Bruninator Edition
We try to keep the Weekly Feed focused pretty intensely at food happenings here in Washington, but there is one item that is too good to pass up. We wanted to make sure we touched on the knockdown-dragout between New York Times critic Frank Bruni and restaurateur Jeffery Chodorow (who you might remember from NBC’s The Restaurant with Rocco Dispirito). Here’s the short version of the story: Bruni reviews Chodorow’s Kobe Club, pans it with…

Morning Roundup: Post-Pumpkin Edition
Sigh. The most wonderful time of the year, Halloween, is over. How’s your candy haul, D.C.? It’s going to be another warm day, with highs reaching the low 70s. So that makes us feel a little better. What else makes us feel good, you ask? This story, from our sister site Seattlest. BWI Improvements Finally Done: About five years, $1.4 billion dollars, and countless moments of inconvenience with roped-off corridors and orange cones later, BWI…

Overheard in D.C.: Mama Can You Hear Me?
Mother Nature has not been very kind to the capital region this summer. From Deluge ’06 to Scorcher ’06, it seems that all we do is moan and bitch about the weather. However, if had some more respect for Mother Nature, then perhaps she wouldn’t be so eager to take out her wrath on us. Quote of the Week SE Washington: Neighbor yelling at someone across the street: “You hear that thundering, bitch? That’s mother…

The Weekly Feed: Horseradish Edition
Wasabi Wa-opens I have been searching for a good cafeteria-style Japanese place for a while. Since I’d be happy to go to Kotobuki every single day for lunch if it weren’t in Outer Mongolia, the opening of Wasabi gives me great joy. Conveniently located at 17th and I Streets, NW, for you downtowners, it’s a welcome addition to a scene dominated by places like the Park Place Gourmet. While my lunchtime map is roughly bordered…

Morning Roundup: Stonecutter Edition
Yesterday morning at Mount Vernon, the cornerstone for a new George Washington museum was laid. The Post takes us through the Masonic rituals involved in the process:At yesterday’s consecration, members of the Alexandria-Washington Masonic Lodge No. 22, dressed in tuxedos and white aprons, poured corn kernels and cruets of canola oil and red wine over the cornerstone. An architect and other officials inspected the rock. Then prayers were read aloud. Number 22 was the first…

Stopping Global Warming Locally
D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams seems to have been taken aback by “An Inconvenient Truth,” the new movie detailing Al Gore’s tireless fight against global warming. In a press release dated June 2, Williams mentions the movie alongside a plea for residents to do whatever they can to prevent global warming. Reads the release: “The best time to act is now,” said Mayor Williams. “Global warming is one of the most dire threats we face. Everyone…
