What are the odds that D.C.’s long-awaited streetcar line will be running along H Street and Benning Road NE by the end of the year?
The D.C. Department of Transportation said yesterday that it’ll propose a number of changes to the city’s Residential Parking Permit program within the next five months.
At a press briefing today, D.C. officials sounded confident that despite the many moving parts they have to contend with, streetcars will roll on H Street NE next year.
No shock here: with the beautiful weather and the increasing interest in cycling in the city, some 12,700 people participated in today’s Bike to Work Day—a record for D.C. And then there was D.C. Department of Transportation Director Terry Bellamy, who rolled in on a pretty sweet trike.

A bit more than a year away from its scheduled debut, the first line along H Street and Benning Road NE is close to veering off the rails, it seems.

Where Are Those Streetcars Going?
Plenty of folks still want to know one simple thing — where are the H Street NE streetcars going to end up?
Yesterday, Greater Greater Washington reported a streetcar bombshell: the 11th Street Bridge, currently undergoing an extensive $300 million renovation, would not feature local streetcar tracks as previously planned. So who’s to blame?

Mayor Vince Gray Begins Damage Assessment
Mayor Vince Gray, DPW Director William O. Howland and DDOT Director Terry Bellamy are conducting a damage assessment survey of the District this morning in the wake of Hurricane Irene, according to a media advisory issued by Gray’s office. The group started at 10:00 am at 3500 Massachusetts Ave, NW and will focus on Wards 1, 2, and 3 this morning.
