Benjy Ferree, The Points, The Shirks @ Black Cat

We don’t understand why Benjy Ferree is not a big star. The Three Stars alum plays roosty indie gems and has great stage presence — he’s a funny and engaging and a strong performer. He’s toured with Spoon and The New Pornographers and is signed to Domino Records (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, etc). And his band is basically a D.C. supergroup, with Laura Harris of The Aquarium, Amy Domingues and Jonah Takagi from Garland…

About Tonight

>> Tonight is the annual 17th Street High Heel Race. The classic D.C. drag event kicks off officially at 9 p.m., but you’ll want to take your position on 17th St. NW between Church and R well before that (we’d recommend 7 at the latest). If you’re looking to make a queer night of it, don’t forget about the Hug-In planned at the U Street Rite Aid at 7 p.m., and the pre-Hug-In Happy Hour…

Weekly Music Agenda

MONDAY >> Do you like screamo? How about metalcore? Us neither, but if you do, get yourself to the 9:30 Club, for Underoath and similarly sinisterly-named Every Time I Die, Poison the Well, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, and Belle and Sebastian. Just kidding about the last one. 6 p.m., $18. TUESDAY >> Stevie Wonder needs no introduction. He’s coming to the Verizon Center today. Tickets start at $68, so get your wallet ready….

Three Stars: The Aquarium

The male/female rock duo formula is a time tested tradition. Whether it owes to the simplicity of the setup, the contrasting timbres and harmonies possible, or some sort of subliminal sexual tension is anyone’s guess. But from Richard & Linda Thompson to Quasi to the White Stripes to Sonny & Cher, and even, um, Roxette, there’s no denying its appeal. The Aquarium popped up in D.C. a full half decade ago, quietly building a following…

Weekly Music Agenda

Monday >> NY jazz pianist Marc Cary returns home to D.C. for back to back Blues Alley shows. Cary has built a strong following on a willingness to explore other genres, and has released records infused with electronic and latin rhythms, in addition to more straightforward post-bop jazz. 8 and 10 p.m., $20. >> Metal Church was lighting up Seattle’s dreary nights with thunderous guitars a decade before everyone started paying much attention to the…

Weekly Music Agenda

From DCist contributor Ryan Avent MONDAY: >> Monday is an excellent time to visit Fort Reno as Garland of Hours (featuring noted DC cellist Amy Domingues and a Fugazi rhythm section) take the stage. They’re joined by DCist favorite The Aquarium and by local songwriter-slash-St. Ex bartender Paul Michel. The show is free as always and begins about 7:15. Click here to read last week’s interview with Paul Michel. >> If tranquil melodies are your…

Music Benefit for GreenSkateLab

This sounds promising — tonight at Club Five, area bands Medications, Citygoats, and The Aquarium (all of whom DCist is a fan of) are holding a benefit for GreenSkateLab. GreenSkateLab is a volunteer community effort to build a free, public and environmentally-friendly multi-purpose space for skateboarding, arts and science. At its conception, The Tony Hawk Foundation and AOL awarded the project grant money to get it on its feet; unfortunately, D.C. public schools, who have…
