American Finally Finds New President
It only took two years, but now Cornelius Kerwin can finally drop the “acting” part of his title. The Post is reporting that Kerwin, who took the helm of American University after petty cash-abuser extraordinaire Ben Ladner was forced to step down in 2005, will formally become the university’s next president. The Board of Trustees had been engaged in a search since January — former Mayor Anthony Williams was even floated as a possible nominee…

Morning Roundup: Tug of War Edition
Good chilly morning to you, Washington. Our neighbors to the north have officially got themselves a new rock-star Governor, as Martin O’Malley was sworn in yesterday afternoon in Maryland to the sounds of the Saw Doctors, an Irish rock band that flew from Dublin for the event, and later to his own band, O’Malley’s March, at his inaugural ball. Not that we’re jealous or anything, but does anyone know if Mayor Fenty plays an instrument?…

Morning Roundup: Ouster at Gallaudet
Happy post-Halloween weekend (and pre-actual Halloween) Monday to you, DCist readers. We hope your weekend was as excessive and gluttonous as it deserved to be. Even if it wasn’t as fun as you had planned, just be thankful that you didn’t have to spend the time defending the sexual escapades in your fictional novels, as Senate candidate James Webb has had to do lately. As we noted earlier, some polls were missing the automated cards needed for the electronic voting machines, and only a short supply of provisional paper ballots were available. Complaints continue to roll in from all over Maryland, with the Post reporting voters being turned away because…

When driving down Kalorama and 17th, it’s hard not to notice the massive “Bring Harris Teeter to Adams Morgan” banner, with the now-defunct www.citadeldc.com web address. What exactly is the status of the much-discussed Citadel building’s Harris Teeter? DCist brings you the latest news on the neighborhood development issue. This past Tuesday morning, the District’s Board of Zoning Adjustment voted 5-0 to approve two zoning variances for the Harris Teeter that were the latest hurdles…

Morning Roundup: Crowds and Clouds Edition
Good morning, Washington. The bad news is that today looks like it’ll be a little bit cloudy. The good news is that as of 8 a.m., WMATA reports no Metro service alerts. The weekend promises just the opposite: Saturday and Sunday’s weather will be pleasant, but WMATA says that all five Metro tracks will be undergoing work. Add in the local disruptions that will be caused by Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, and you’ve got some…

GWU Professor Suggests Ladner Lawsuit
Students are angry. Faculty are indignant. Deans are upset. Former trustees are beyond themselves. All told, American University has seen better days. Since yesterday’s announcement that ousted president Benjamin Ladner would be receiving a severance package totaling almost $4 million, there has been a flurry of activity on all ends of the leafy Northwest campus. Both the university’s student government and a coalition of anti-Ladner activists released statements condemning the settlement, while the faculty and…
