Au Revoir, Bonapartes
According to announcements at their website and on their MySpace page, almost-there local band The Bonapartes are calling it quits. Details on the cause are very thin, but it does appear that the band will be playing a last show (and it looks like a good one) June 2 at Black Cat, so we’re guessing the band members are at least on speaking terms. Here’s A Hint posted on this yesterday (using the only appropriate…

Weekly Music Agenda
MONDAY >> The 9:30 Club has enough hotness going on tonight to shut down for the rest of the week. Luckily, they’re not, but tonight will still be one hell of a night for music in its hallowed halls. Kicking things off with the early show are The Sounds, female-fronted Swedish rockers, peddling what we call indie and the rest of the world calls pop, much to the delight of reviewers ’round the Web. Touring…

Black Cat Showcases “Battle” of the Bands
Today’s review was written by DCist contributor Jim Smalley, a patent examiner for the USPTO and aspiring local musician. For those who weren’t living on a prayer at the MCI Center Saturday night, the Black Cat hosted a classic matchup of local music, featuring three D.C. bands each armed with their own flavor of rock n’ roll. The temptingly-diverse bill drew from all circles of D.C. society, packing the Cat with friends and fans alike….

Three Stars: Lejeune
This is the third installment of December’s Three Stars. On Wednesday, we covered The Bonapartes, and yesterday we discussed The Lucky Bastards. Today, we bring you Lejeune. Lejeune Not too long ago, several DCists headed to DC9 to listen to a trio of Three Stars candidates. By the end of the second act’s set, we felt comfortable about featuring either of the bands we’d heard. It was getting late, and we all had to get…

Three Stars: The Lucky Bastards
This is the second installment of December’s Three Stars. Yesterday, we covered The Bonapartes, and tomorrow we’ll be discussing LeJeune. Today, we bring you The Lucky Bastards. The Lucky Bastards DCist caught The Lucky Bastards at a laid-back show at the Black Cat one cold, late November evening. Having gone into the show not knowing much about the band, we came out pleasantly surprised at the group’s ability to comfortably mix sounds from 70s-tinged soul,…

Today, we talk to The Bonapartes, and discuss their new EP. The Bonapartes So, DCist last saw The Bonapartes at an under-the-radar benefit gig in the front room of a Florida Avenue townhouse, where the lo-fi sound setup had our ears ringing and the advertised open bar was a couple of…

Weekly Music Agenda
(From DCist contributor Amanda Mattos) To play in D.C. this week, you apparently have to have played at Bonnaroo, been involved with a movie star, or started your career here. MONDAY: >>After a 2004 tour with the Blind Boys of Alabama, and countless appearances on mix CDs burned in dorm rooms, Ben Harper (at right) alights the 9:30 Club with friend and cohort, Tom Freund. The two recorded the album Pleasure & Pain together in…
(Interview by DCist contributor Justin Kielsgard) In the late 70s, through forces still unknown, six different mothers on the East coast gave birth to six different babies, all somehow imbued in the womb with the influences of Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, the Beatles, and Dave Brubeck. The children, all boys, were raised on Voodoo Economics, Marvel Comics, RUN DMC records, and the public school system of the 1980s. Later on in their lives, they somehow…
