Freeman Klopott has been doing some boffo work on the Metropolitan Police Department’s troubles with breath analysis technology, D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan’s role in dropping (and reinstating) several DUI cases because of those troubles and how police are apparently using urine tests to gauge drivers’ blood alcohol levels. But this story, which Klopott shared over at the Examiner’s Capital Land blog last night, really takes the cake.

Examining Your Delivery Problems
It’s something that’s been a Washingtonian issue since way back in 2005, but one which has never gotten resolved: if you don’t want the Examiner delivered to your home, how do you stop it? Recently, members from the Cleveland Park listserv have taken up the task of trying to figure out exactly how to cease the unwanted circulation of the ubiquitous free daily, claiming that the paper is overly wasteful and an easy indicator of…

Morning Roundup: Bitter Pills Edition
Good morning, Washington. It really is freezing outside, people are dropping like flies from this terrible cold going around town, and over in Iowa, we hear there’s some kind of a fake election going on that’s going to dominate the news cycle all day. It could all be enough to get us down, but yet, we carry on … until we read this story about an 11-year-old boy in Burke, VA who has been…

Morning Roundup: Happiness Enforcement Edition
Good morning, Washington. With a new year less than 24 hours away and an improbable playoff berth for the Redskins suddenly a reality, we frankly expect you to have been skipping in to your offices today, in a total and joyous rapture. Even if you’ve had to work straight through the holidays this year, we will tolerate no whining on this, or really any other matter, on this particular New Year’s Eve. There will be…

Morning Roundup: Almost There Edition
Happy Almost Holidays, Washington. With both Monday and Tuesday counting as a holiday for the federal government this year, most of D.C. is staring down a nice, long holiday break today. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, federal holidays are great for a lot of other reasons besides a day off – you don’t have to feed parking meters, for instance. But The Examiner reports that that fact isn’t stopping people from shoveling coins into…

MLK Library ‘Possible’ Bloomingdale’s Location
The Examiner ran a story on Monday about Bloomingdale’s recent round of talks with the city regarding opening a new store in downtown D.C. Along with the recently approved development at the Old Convention Center site, sources in the Fenty administration told Michael Neibauer that the talks have included the controversial Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 9th and G Streets NW as a “possible option” for the store. The library, as you’ll recall,…

Morning Roundup: All Fired Up Edition
Good morning, Washington. We hope not too many of you were making your way into the city from Montgomery County this morning, as two separate water main breaks forced road closures in Takoma Park and kids to get the day off from school in Germantown. We’ll admit it — we’re pretty envious of the students at Fox Chapel Elementary School, who get to spend the day doing whatever they please while we had to show…

Morning Roundup: All in a Row Edition
Good morning, Washington. Getting going on a Monday is normally difficult enough, but we were having a few technological difficulties this morning as well, so thanks for your patience and bear with this truncated Morning Roundup while we get up to speed. Tax Scandal Triggers Reviews in Counties: Neighboring jurisdictions are apparently taking D.C.’s tax office scandal to heart and initiating big reviews of their agencies. Property tax revenues are slated to be scrutinized in…

Morning Roundup: Break Out Your Shovels Edition
How about that first snow storm of the season, Washington? CapitalWeather.com says that “yesterday’s clipper system actually significantly ‘over-performed,'” which is why we ended up with 2-4″ of snow for the region instead of the 1″ we were originally expecting. The Examiner was concerned about your commute this morning thanks to overnight lows that were forecast to drop into the low 20s, allowing for ice to refreeze on the roads in time for this…

Morning Roundup: Bad Moon on the Rise Edition
Good morning, Washington. We hope you had a pleasant and restful evening despite the howling wind and bitter cold. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee had a bit of a rough night last night herself, as she was greeted by throngs of angry Ward 5 parents at the first community meeting that allowed her to present the school closures plan to the public. Ward 5 D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. had set up the separate meeting…
