Morning Roundup: Duck, Duck … Oops Edition
Friday has arrived at last, Washington. Despite the federal holiday on Monday, it’s been a rather long week for many of us – though of course, we couldn’t hold a candle to the week that D.C. CFO Natwar Gandhi has had. The Post writes about yesterday’s lengthy D.C. Council hearing into the tax office scandal, which lasted until 9 p.m. and where it was apparently revealed late in the evening that authorities are investigating the…

“Why Not Me?” Gets Less Rhetorical
This entry was written by contributor Ben Clark. D.C. shows its love for politics in many ways, but nothing is quite as wonktastic as waiting in line for a citywide premiere of a documentary about Al Franken. Last Friday I made the trek to the only movie theater in the city that still serves beer for the premiere of God Spoke, sponsored by American Family Voices, to enjoy some Coulter- and Hannity-bashing with inebriated fellow…

It’s Hard Being the Washington Times
Staffers at the Washington Times just don’t get a break, do they? Apart being regularly lambasted for working for a money-bleeding newspaper owned by the odd Rev. Sun Myung Moon, now they’re getting a in-depth look into the struggle for the paper’s leadership. This week The Nation features as its cover story a 4,200-word expose on the battle between current Editor-in-Chief Wesley Pruden and Preston Moon, the reverend’s son. According to the piece, Pruden, now…

Triathlon Becomes Duathlon
Last month we reported that the District’s first official triathlon, the Nation’s Triathlon, was a go. After months of haggling with competing jurisdictions for permit, race organizers got the final go-ahead for the event, which would include a swim in the Potomac River, a bike ride up Rock Creek Park, and a run to the U.S. Capitol and back. Plenty of readers made jokes about swimming in the Potomac. Hell, so did I –…

Interview with The Walkmen
DCist caught up with Pete Bauer of The Walkmen this weekend as the band is about to start touring for their excellent new album, A Hundred Miles Off. The Walkmen play Thursday night at the 9:30 Club, and while we wish them all the luck in the world and a sold out crowd, there’s sure to be a palpable absence of DCist readers present, as we’re hosting Unbuckled, simultaneously. Update: After posting this interview, Hamilton…

Busy Week Ahead
There’s a variety of events this week that might be of interest to DCist readers. Tomorrow, WMATA will be holding their first-ever “open house” at their downtown headquarters. In light of a number of recent transit snafus, we think this meeting will be well worth attending — if only to see who turns up. Wednesday is the November Weblogger Meetup scheduled through the Meetup.com service. The group will be meeting at 7 p.m. at the…

Go Green This Weekend
(From DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) If youre looking for something to do on this rainy weekend in D.C., you might think about putting on your finest hemp clothing and attending the DC Green Festival being held at the Washington convention center. A joint project of Global Exchange and Co-Op America, the Green Festivals are a two-day party with a serious purpose: to accelerate the emergence of a new economic paradigm that is life-affirming, inclusive and…
