GW Student Makes Half-Court Shot on First Try
A sharpshooting GW student earned a free round-trip flight at the Colonials’ hoops game last Wednesday by swishing a half court shot on his first try. The turquoise shorts-wearing, foam tricorner-hatted student, named Charles, had two chances to complete the feat during GW’s win over Boston University at the Smith Center, but only needed the first. While a few students complained that the shooter had stepped over the line (audible in the video), we…

College Hoops Rundown: Hoyas, Terps Continue Surge
Georgetown 61, Pittsburgh 53 The Big East is aptly named. The 16-team behemoth is the largest in Division I and backs up its girth with some of the finest play in the nation. So it’s no small feat that Georgetown has climbed to the top of this daunting hill. Backed by the strong play of juniors Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert, and Jonathan Wallace, the Hoyas gritted their way to a victory over a Pittsburgh…

No Love For GW Women’s Hoops
The George Washington University women’s basketball team is ranked #8 in the country by the AP, riding a 14-game winning streak to a 21-2 record. They’re undefeated in conference play, and have only lost to then #1 Maryland and then #5/6 Tennessee, and beat then #10/11 and current #9 Georgia. The team includes the Adair twins from Anacostia – 6’4 Jessica, who leads the team in scoring, and 6’3 Jazmine. But only 661 people per…

Red Auerbach, R.I.P.
Washington D.C. lost one of its favorite adopted sons over the weekend as Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89. Best known as the patriarch of the Boston Celtics, Auerbach had close ties to D.C., the city he called home for much of his life. Auerbach attended George Washington University from 1937-1940, starring on the basketball team as the team’s top scorer. In 1946, after stints in the Navy and as…

College Hoops Roundup: GW, UMd, Howard win
It’s a familiar script for the George Washington mens’ basketball team. Let an inferior team hang around — maybe even lead — until midway through the second half, then go on a devastating run. In the case of last night’s 89-78 win at St. Bonaventure, the Colonials trailed by four with under eight minutes left before reeling off 13 straight points to take control. Three Colonials finished in double figures in both points and…

Weekend Hoops Roundup: Everyone But Maryland Edition
It was a busy weekend for college hoops in the area. By and large, it was also a successful one. George Washington clinched the regular season Atlantic 10 title, beating Fordham 78-67 at the Smith Center Saturday night. Playing without injured forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the Colonials won their sixteenth straight game behind 19 points from sophomore guard Maureece Rice. His backcourt mates, Danilo Pinnock (17 points) and Carl Elliott (16 points) also stepped up in…

Smith Point’s Awkward Position
Like the double-faced Janus, there are two Smith Points. One is the Georgetown restaurant loved by neighbors for its food, the other is the exclusive club environment that gets going later toward midnight, made famous by two infamous patrons, the Bush twins. And numerous people (including these women who were apparently White House interns last summer who posted their W.H. photos on Webshots) have followed in their wake. As some community interests in Georgetown continue…
