On the heels of a successful European tour in support of their widely-praised sixth LP, Lisbon, The Walkmen capped off a banner year with a pair of homecoming concerts, one in New York City and one last Friday night at the 9:30 Club in D.C., from which all five band members originally hail. With family and friends watching alongside a rapt capacity crowd, the St. Albans and Maret alums delivered a sterling ninety-minute performance during which they easily lived up to their reputation as one of indie-rock’s preeminent live acts.
Our occasional series “Secret History” features profiles of past D.C. albums as a way of looking back at the District’s contributions to music over time. In this installment, we revisit garage-rock upstarts the Recoys’ Rekoys LP (Troubleman Unlimited/Realistic Records, 2003).
MONDAY
Where Is Home, the forthcoming second album by eclectic sonic experimentalists Janel and Anthony, is definitely something to look forward to in early 2011. In the meantime, head to Galaxy Hut tonight to watch the duo showcase their mesmeric improvisations on guitar and cello. Local folk-rockers Frau Eva open. $5. 9 p.m.
The Walkmen provided some glimpses of the future on Tuesday night, playing a 17-song set to a pretty-full-but-not-sold-out 9:30 Club. However, if Tuesday’s set served a as an indicator as to the band’s songwriting direction, then they haven’t quite made their mind up yet. The word “boozy” has been used to describe the band’s sound in the past, but “boozy” only buys you a finite line of credit. The band’s most recent work has showcased multiple divergent influences. 2006’s A Hundred Miles Off brought in horns and a bit of punk rock, while 2008’s You & Me brought a more soulful sound, making singer Hamilton Leithauser sound like an age-old indie-rock crooner.
Just a heads up, Live Nation let us know that they’ve released some extra tickets to the nearly sold out Kings of Leon/Walkmen show tonight at the Patriot Center.
