Playoff Match-ups Set, Wiz Will Face Cavs

The Washington Wizards did what they had to do last, beating the Indiana Pacers on the road 98-95. The win cemented the 7th seed in the East for the Wiz, setting up a rematch of last year’s exciting series with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs clinched the 2nd seed in the East by virtue of their win over Milwaukee and Chicago’s loss in New Jersey. Here’s how the series will shakedown, schedule-wise: Game 1…

No Butler, No Problem For Wizards

The Washington Wizards found out last Friday that they’d be without Caron Butler for the next 10 or so days, not exactly the type of thing you want to hear with the Miami Heat breathing down their necks for the division lead. As we’re sure you all remember, the team was 0-3 without Butler earlier in the season. Lucky for the Wizards then that the struggling New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets (aka the…

Wizards Move One Step Closer To .500

The Washington Wizards took another step towards the Mendoza Line last night with an emphatic 120-91 win over the visiting Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets entered the Verizon Center with an impressive 12-7 record and a viable MVP candidate in Baltimore product Carmelo Anthony. They left the court looking like a team that was in the middle of a five game road trip, wondering who would be shipped out of town in a possible deal…

Wizards Look to the East

The Washington Wizards went out on a limb and selected two Eastern Europeans in last night’s draft. As basketball continues to become a more international sport, teams have been more willing to use draft picks on relatively unproven talents overseas. With the 18th pick overall, the Wizards selected forward Oleksiy Pecherov, a 7-foot Ukranian. It was the first time that they had used a first round pick on an international player. With their second pick,…

Wizards Look To Get Back On Track

When the NBA calendar turns to March, teams are either start thinking about lottery choices or jockeying for playoff position. The Washington Wizards, after a slow start to the season, seemed to find their groove in February and catapulted themselves back into the playoff race, currently holding a precarious grip on the sixth seed in the East. Tonight on ESPN, they take on Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers, who currently trail the Wizards…

Wizards Continue Winning Ways

The Washington Wizards appear to have turned the corner. Last night’s 84-79 win over the Indiana Pacers gives the Wiz wins in eight of their last 11 games and puts them one game under .500 for the season. The Pacers, who have now lost six in a row, played their first game with recent acquisition Peja Stojakovic, acquired last week for the ever-disgruntled Ron Artest. Peja scored 17, but was mostly ineffective last night, shooting…

Wizards Struggle With Growing Pains, Losing Streak

The Washington Wizards started last week one game below .500 and facing four games in a span of six days that threatened to send their season into a tailspin if things went badly. After an overtime win at home on Tuesday against the woeful Raptors, the team failed to gain any momentum, losing three games to Eastern Conference rivals Indiana, Chicago and Miami. Getting destroyed on national TV to the Pacers was bad, but…

Weekend Sports Roundup: Late Letdown Edition

>> The Washington Wizards played strong for three quarters yesterday but were outscored 26-12 in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Bulls pulled away late for a 103-94 victory. The Bulls were led by rookie Ben Gordon’s 30 points (12 in the fourth quarter) and fellow rook Andres Nocioni (25 points and 18 boards), coupled with their trademark tough team defense and opportunistic offensive rebounding. The Wizards “Big Three” didn’t fare as well. Gilbert…

Wizards Snap Skid, Clinch Winning Season

The Washington Wizards ended their longest losing streak of the season last night beating the Milwauke Bucks 119-112 at the MCI Center. The Wiz were powered by Antawn Jamison’s 32 points and a season high 13 assists from Gilbert Arenas, who scored only 8 points on 2 of 9 shooting. Perhaps this was a wake up call for Arenas. Washington is just 1-4 in games when he scores over 40 points. Last night he focused…
