We know it seems like you have to drop $100 to eat out around D.C. — here are some tips from some of our region’s most voracious eaters on how to lower the bill.

Employers with tipped workers will have to pay $6 per hour beginning in May 2023, and $8 starting in July 2023.

Restaurant owners and advocates are considering lobbying the D.C. Council for legislative changes that could help offset the costs of phasing out the tipped wage.

Many employees say that their overall wages decreased, even though management coupled the elimination of tips with an hourly pay increase.

The effort revives Initiative 77, which voters approved in 2018, before it was overturned in a historic move by the D.C. Council.

The only place worse than D.C., by a very narrow margin, is Hawaii, where folks give up an average of 14.8 percent for tips.

Advocates for restaurant workers say they will work to get it on the 2018 ballot.

There’s widespread support for raising it to $15 an hour by 2020, but proposals for the tipped minimum wage were the subject of heated debate.
