Go Home Already: Dumb Luck

Tons of people told us about the large tree that fell over near Dupont Circle last night, crushing a parked car and causing the street to shut down. This photo was posted to the DCist Flickr pool, so we thought we’d go ahead and share it, though we still haven’t heard back about what caused the tree to fall — we’re guessing old age. >> “…by reducing Thursday drinking, overall drinking on campuses would…

Photo of the Day: April 26, 2007

We just loved the colors in this photo of a new office building on Vermont Avenue NW by Doug van Sant. It’s nice to see that the building boom in D.C. doesn’t have to mean only bland boxes that maximize space. He has a nice little series of Vermont Avenue buildings on his Flickr page as well….

Il Mulino Ready to Loosen Belts Inside the Beltway

This post written by DCist Food contributor Analiese Bendorf While Washingtonians managed to evade the worst of the country’s winter weather, there is one thing that blew into town that we’ll gladly welcome. That thing is Il Mulino, a branch of New York’s Italian restaurant by the same name. It’s known for its gargantuan, garlicky portions and is poised to take D.C.’s upscale dining scene by storm. The restaurant was originally founded in New York’s…

Morning Roundup: Dirty Massage Parlor Edition

Sex-Slave Trafficking Ring Broken Up: We’d always heard rumors that certain massage parlors in the District offered, ummmm, “happy endings” and other such services. Apparently, the rumors were true. Federal officials yesterday arrested 31 people along the east coast involved in a sex-slave trafficking ring that forced Korean women to work as prostitutes in massage parlors and spas, some of which were located in the District. Four men were arrested in the District following raids…

Morning Roundup: Angry in Logan Circle Edition

More on the church parking issue, you say? Today we find the Washington Times reporting that some Logan Circle residents are fuming at what they see as a concession to the neighborhood’s powerful churches, a day after D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams put off enforcement measures and instead appointed a taskforce to study the matter. After close to a year of complaints, city officials promised to start enforcing the city’s double-parking laws on Sunday, going…

Troubled Parkers

The Washington Times today features this quote, from a lawyer with an organization planning to oppose parking enforcement, “The law shouldn’t be applied in a way that unfairly burdens churches…This double-parking law is unconstitutional because it puts an unfair burden on the religious institution.” It’s often the smallest issues that expose deeper rifts within a city, and the growing imbroglio over illegal church parking threatens to grow into a full-scale exposure of Washington tensions. This,…

Wine Expo: You Can Do Your Homework … On the Boat!

In a perfect world, DCist would purchase its holiday gifts straight out of “Fantasy Gifts” section of the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book catalogue. Unfortunately, we lack the $3.5 million to purchase the Jetsonian M400 Skycar for Dad and the $1.5 million to lock up the private Elton John concert for Mom. Considering both our relative poverty and our reluctance to be a Cell Phone Bandit copycat, we must turn to other – significantly cheaper –…

Out and About: Weekend Picks

FRIDAY: >> If you’re not Black Cat-ed out from the Unbuckled concert last night, head over to the mainstage to catch an indie-tastic show with The Whips, Her Daily Obsession (at right), and The Hard Tomorrows, all of whom we hear will put on one hell of a show. Doors are at 9:30 p.m.; $8. >> If you missed a screening of “9:30 F ST,” the documentary about the old 9:30 Club, worry not –…

Plotting the Future of Shaw, U Street

If you have any interest in the future of U Street and Shaw as a whole, the District’s Office of Planning and Economic Development and the Office of Planning is hosting a forum tonight on the future of planning in the neighborhoods, especially along the U Street and Seventh Street corridors in Northwest. The session will address “the redevelopment of key publicly-owned buildings and land, including the Howard Theatre and Grimke School on Vermont Avenue,…
