First Ride: Northern Virginia Opens New “66-Parallel” Bike And Walking Trail

Three of the new trail’s 18 miles are crammed in between eight lanes of interstate traffic and a sound wall. Local riders, runners and advocates see it as an imperfect compromise.

Morning Roundup: Trojan Horses Edition

Good morning, D.C. Yesterday was just about the most beautiful day, weather-wise, that the city has seen in a long time, and today we’re expecting more of the same. So is there anything on God’s green Earth that could cause us to lose the attendant sunny dispositions we all naturally have as a result? Oh, drat. It’s Thursday. Metro General Manager John Catoe will appear before Metro’s Board of Directors today and recommend raising minimum…

Vienna Metro Attacker Gets Pushy

The man whose rampant flagging (or pantsing, depending on who you ask) attempts around the Vienna metro stop last fall had women buckling their belts a little tighter appears to be back at it, though this time around he’s gotten more aggressive. According to NBC4, Police said a man tackled the 50-year-old woman about 10:30 p.m. as she walked along a footpath near the 9500 block of Lagersfield Circle. According to police the man grabbed…

Second Center?

Former Editor-in-Chief Ryan Avent writes a weekly column about neighborhood and development issues. “Has a second core emerged?” asked a Bureau of Labor Statistics report this week, drawing the metropolitan area’s attention to the remarkable growth in business and professional employment in Virginia’s Fairfax County. Headline after headline emphasized the county’s new status as second pole in a newly bipolar metropolis, after we learned that Fairfax had pulled to within 100,000 jobs of the District…

Morning Roundup: Deep Breaths Edition

It’s going to be a perfectly lovely day, maybe a little on the warm side even, with just a slim chance of showers later this afternoon. We should all, no doubt, have a little spring in our steps. And luckily for us we can, seeing as how we don’t usually comment on the goings on up on the Hill. If we did, we might be forced to face some ugly realities this morning. We might,…

If You See This Man, Hang on to Your Shorts

NBC4 has the story that five area women have reported being assaulted near the Vienna Metro. Police said the culprit approaches his victims from behind and attempts to pull down their shorts. In each of the cases the women have screamed and the man has run away. No one has been physically hurt. … The attacker is described as a dark-skinned Middle Eastern or Hispanic man believed to be in his 20s, standing about 5…

Morning Roundup: Crowded Mall Edition

Today’s evening commute could be a wild one as around 180,000 demonstrators are expected to gather on the Mall this afternoon, many after marching through the downtown area from Meridian Hill Park. The National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice is expected to draw large crowds of supporters in cities across the nation (and has already begun to do so — some 300,000 gathered yesterday in Dallas). The march through the city will begin around…

Morning Roundup: Is It Spring Yet Edition

Good morning, Washington. We hope you’re reading this from the comfort of your toasty home, sipping some coffee and wriggling your toes in slippers shaped like some ridiculous sort of animal. If this is in fact the case, let us offer a word of advice: STAY INSIDE. Today’s high temperature is going to be 43 degrees. 43! It’s still November — we’re just not prepared to grapple with highs of 43 yet. Call your boss…

Transit on Friday: Odds & Ends

Does Vienna Really Look Like That? It’s one thing when out-of-town producers come into the area and screw up backdrops. We were almost willing to forgive the producers of Fox’s “Bones,” whose ignorance of the area’s geography led them to place the U.S. Capitol within eyesight of Dulles International Airport. But it’s a whole other thing when the mistake is made by locals. In an online ad for The Four Winds at Oakton, an upscale…

Morning Roundup: Post Halloween Edition

Halloween falling on a Monday night, DCist took the night off, opting to hand candy to passing children and fend off egg attacks from neighborhood hooligans. We did explore area houses, though, taking in decorations both simple and elaborate. And proving that some people will use any opportunity to make a statement about the state of affairs in the country, we spied one gravestone marked “Scooter Libby, R.I.P.” and one proclaiming the death of world…
