Six Weeks After McPherson Square Encampment Clearing, Most Residents Still Don’t Have Homes
Just 22 of the former McPherson Square encampment residents have moved into housing of some kind, chipping away at the community’s trust of government services.
The two schools — Calvary Christian Academy and the two Dupont Park Adventist School campuses — get money through the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which provides vouchers with federal money to low-income students for private school tuition.
After initially cutting a D.C. school voucher program from his 2013 budget, President Barack Obama has agreed to restore funding for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program.
A federally funded program offering D.C. public school students vouchers for private school tuition has long been a flashpoint between many Republicans and Democrats, and now it has become an issue in the 2012 presidential contest between Mitt Romney and President Obama.

D.C. School Voucher Bill Likely To Pass House Today
A bill that would revive a school voucher program in the District will likely come to a vote in the House of Representatives today, where it is expected to pass. The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which would provide $7,500 to qualifying students to put towards private-school tuition and has been pushed by Speaker of the House John Boehner, was passed by a House panel earlier this month. It’s chances in the Senate, where the Democratic leadership opposes the program, are less clear.
Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME) care so much about D.C. public schools that they’re willing to forgo funding them if a controversial voucher program isn’t revived.
