A tornado with winds reaching 90 mph touched down in Bowie yesterday, leaving uprooted trees and some damaged houses in its wake.

Meteorologists and residents have reported rising tides and heavy winds — up to 40 mph in some places.

Heavy rainfall is one of the hallmarks of climate change in the D.C. region.

Severe thunderstorms brought flooding, power outages and left one person dead. One tornado was also reported in Maryland.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Ida are heading toward the D.C. region, bringing 2-4 inches of rain and possible flooding on Wednesday.

The storms aren’t necessarily more severe or frequent this year. But by no means is our region off the hook, climate-wise.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday.

The first real winter weather of the season is on the way, but parts of D.C. and the immediate suburbs may not see much snow.

Restaurants are bracing for a tough winter when diners may be less likely to want to go out to eat with cold temperatures. 

West Coast smoke has drifted across the U.S., giving D.C. skies a hazy appearance. But the air quality is still good.
