Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
This week we’d like to congratulate the -ist network’s Mother Hen, Gothamist’s Jen Chung, who found herself a recipient of Wired Magazine’s Wired Rave Award. If that doesn’t sound terribly exciting, keep in mind another recipient was J.K. Rowling. Yep, that’s right, the -ist network and Harry Potter now have something in common. Go us. Austinist has a chat with the ever-fashionable Golden Girl Rue McClanahan, and managed to catch some local fashionistas making…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
We here in the Ist-A-Verse know that we’re sensational, but it’s very rare that we get a chance to be sensationalistic. This week, we’ve decided to have ourselves a little fun and try our hand at tacky tabloid headlines, using nothing more than our favorite posts from this week. Torontoist Special Report: Rosie to Trump: “Fire 300 Bicyclists for Fraud!” On DCist: Students Go Wild for Slogans, Secrets and Sexual Harassment The action was thick…

Go Home Already: We Be Votin’
While it might be a little premature to assume that we’re definitely going to get a vote in Congress, the news from the Hill has caused us to spend the better part of the day pondering what the newfound freedom will feel like. And in our happy world, District residents will pour into the streets, embrace and break into spontaneous dance to the tune of “Dancin’ in the Street” and “We Built this City.”…

D.C. Among Top Tech Towns
Congratulations, everybody: Wired says that we’re one of the nation’s top ten tech towns, putting us in the company of undeniably geek-friendly cities like San Francisco, Austin and Seattle. But to be honest, Wired’s methodology seems a little bit suspect. Other cities made the list on the basis of a high number of comic book stores per capita, the ubiquity of free wifi, or the popularity of the local Dorkbot chapter. Our qualifications? We’re desperately…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
The weekly Ist wrap-up is written by Seattlest editor Dan Gonsiorowski. After Wired ran a story documenting the GoogleCenter of the United States a bunch of ists jumped on the opportunity to figure out their own middle. Gothamist, Chicagoist, Bostonist, DCist and Seattlest all zoomed in on their creamy GoogleCenters. A crack cartography team is hard at work determining the GoogleCenter of the Ist-a-verse as you read this… Austinist read a book about Olympian Bode…

Journey to the GoogleCenter
So, we’ve been watching as Wired pinpointed the GoogleCenter of the country and Gothamist followed suit, locating the GoogleCenter of the Big Apple. The Internet being what it is, with the imitation and all, we decided to give this a whirl ourselves. To do so, you simply visit the venerable Google Maps page and type in a location. Then, zoom. Ultimately, you should find yourself staring at what the G-men consider the center of…

Brickfest Results in Awesome Photos
We’re not sure how we missed that Brickfest 2005, a “celebration of Lego creativity” that highlighted creations by talented Lego builders, was happening in our own backyard this weekend at George Mason University, but we did. And now we are sad. Because it looks like it was totally fun. A Wired article we ran across talks about Brickfest and highlights the obsession and attention to detail that results in the creations:Arthur Gugick, a teacher from…

Adding Dimensions to Our Daily News
Last Friday the Post published an article discussing American service members deployed to Iraq who maintain a blog, on the heels of a Wired piece discussing the same. The articles gave DCist pause as we noted the changes that this sometimes hated, sometimes revered practice of blogging have brought to our news gathering habits. A few weeks ago, DCist posted about using RSS feeds and Bloglines to keep track of your daily blog reading, but…
