The XFL is back again with the D.C. Defenders’ season starting on February 18. Third time’s the charm, right?

On Friday morning, just months after the start of the XFL’s premiere season, the nascent alternate football league suspended operations, laying off nearly all employees with no plans to return.

The team takes on the Seattle Dragons in the season opener on Saturday at Audi Field.

The league’s official statement said the closures were “direct consequences of the current financial restraints facing the AFL.”
